India will Resume Full Visa Services in Bangladesh, Reflecting an Improvement in Diplomatic Relations Between the Two Nations

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a positive signal regarding the diplomatic relationship between India and Bangladesh, Aniruddha Das, a senior Indian consular official based in Sylhet, announced that India plans to resume all visa services in Bangladesh in the near future. During an address at the Sylhet District Press Club, Das indicated that the restoration of these services is a priority, with current efforts focusing on issuing medical and double-entry visas, while plans are underway to reinstate additional categories including travel visas.

Background of Diplomatic Strain

The relationship between India and Bangladesh has experienced significant strain following political events in mid-2024, which led to the removal of the Awami League government and then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Since her assumption of office in 2009, the ties between the two nations were generally characterized by strong collaboration, but recent years saw increasing perception in Bangladesh of India’s backing of an increasingly authoritarian regime. These tensions peaked during the interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus, marked by the release of individuals who have expressed anti-India sentiments and an overall uptick in dismissive rhetoric regarding India’s role in Bangladesh.

Suspension of Visa Services

Due to escalating security concerns impacting its diplomatic missions, India suspended visa services in Bangladesh starting on December 17, 2025. This decision was largely seen as a response to the deteriorating security environment for Indian officials, coupled with a rising tide of anti-India sentiment fueled by political developments within Bangladesh. The recent elections, which brought Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Tarique Rahman to power on February 12, have signaled a potential thaw in relations, with both governments looking to mend ties that boast a shared historical context.

Hope for Improved Bilateral Relations

Das emphasized the significance of ordinary citizens in both countries as integral to fostering a stable and positive bilateral relationship. He remarked that the cultural and historical connections between India and Bangladesh have been intertwined for centuries. His comments reflect a hopeful outlook on the future of diplomatic ties, suggesting that mutual respect and cooperation will form the basis of ongoing discussions. The Indian official’s optimism about improved relations underscores the potential for collaboration that could benefit both nations in various sectors, including trade, security, and cultural exchanges.
