India Considers Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Maldives’ Request for Diesel Supply

The CSR Journal Magazine

New Delhi has received formal requests from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives for the supply of petroleum products, as confirmed by the spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal. These requests come amid rising global fuel supply challenges attributed to the ongoing conflict in West Asia linked to tensions between the US, Israel, and Iran.

Bangladesh is currently grappling with a significant shortfall in petrol and diesel and has been receiving diesel shipments from India, manufacturing a demand for additional supplies. Jaiswal stated that India, being a significant exporter of petroleum, especially to neighboring nations, has been facilitating diesel exports to Bangladesh using multiple transportation methods, including waterways, rail, and the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline, operated in collaboration with the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation.

Before finalizing any additional supply commitments, Jaiswal emphasized that India will consider its own diesel availability and refining capabilities. Furthermore, he acknowledged similar requests from Sri Lanka and the Maldives, indicating a broader regional inquiry for energy support amid supply disruptions.

Reports suggest that the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline has been crucial to ongoing energy trade, continuously supplying diesel on a commercial basis from Assam’s Numaligarh Refinery Limited since its inauguration. The pipeline, the first of its kind between India and Bangladesh, can transport up to 1 Million Metric Ton Per Annum (MMTPA) of High-Speed Diesel to Bangladesh, reflecting a commitment to bilateral energy cooperation.

According to Muhammad Rezanur Rahman, Chairman of the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation, 5,000 tonnes of diesel were successfully imported from India just yesterday, with the fuel entering Bangladesh through the Parbatipur border. This supply marks a continuation of the routine energy exchanges between the two countries.

In addition, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has recently engaged in multiple discussions with the Iranian Foreign Minister, focusing on shipping safety and India’s energy security. Jaiswal remarked that he could not disclose further specifics at this juncture, noting that the dialogue reflects India’s proactive approach to regional energy concerns.
