Imran Khan Returned to Adiala Jail Following Supreme Court-Ordered Health Assessment

The CSR Journal Magazine

Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, was moved back to Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi on the morning of August 21, after undergoing a medical check-up at Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad. This transfer was executed in accordance with a Supreme Court directive issued on August 18, mandating that Khan be admitted to a hospital for examination within two days.

Reports indicate that Khan was shifted to the hospital shortly after midnight, complying with the apex court’s instruction. The court has scheduled a subsequent hearing regarding his case for September 16. Amid a complex legal and political landscape, there had been a contention regarding the adequacy of Khan’s medical treatment while in custody.

Khan’s political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), had previously intimated that they would pursue legal action for contempt of court if he was not permitted hospital admission by the stipulated deadline. However, the Adviser on Political Affairs to the Prime Minister, Rana Sanaullah, countered claims of a strict deadline for Khan’s transfer.

Medical Findings and Family Presence

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar confirmed via social media that Khan returned to prison post-examination, although he did not specifically name Khan or mention the hospital in his statement. According to Tarar, a medical team composed of various specialists examined Khan and deemed him medically fit. This team included an ophthalmologist, a cardiologist, and other health professionals who conducted a comprehensive evaluation of his health.

Notably, Khan’s sister, Uzma Khan, was reportedly present throughout the medical assessment. Following the completion of his examination, Khan was returned to Adiala Jail around 5 am, as per Tarar’s announcement.

Khan has been incarcerated at Adiala Jail since his arrest on August 5, 2023, facing multiple allegations, including corruption. His recent medical evaluation highlighted significant health concerns, including severe anxiety, classified as “level three plus,” which can seriously impact daily functions. Additionally, concerning eye conditions have contributed to demands for his transfer to a private medical facility.

Ongoing Health Concerns and Legal Issues

The medical report reviewed in court indicated that Khan has been suffering from serious anxiety that can hinder everyday activities and lead to physical distress. His eye condition came to public attention earlier this year, leading to several hospital visits for treatment of right central retinal vein occlusion.

Family members and supporters of Khan have frequently expressed alarm over his health situation, alleging that authorities have infringed upon his rights by limiting access to necessary medical care, family visits, and legal assistance. These ongoing concerns underscore the contentious nature of his custody and treatment within the justice system.

Despite the recent hospital visit, which took place under court orders, the broader issue surrounding Khan’s healthcare and imprisonment remains unresolved. The legal proceedings concerning his treatment are expected to develop further, as the Supreme Court prepares for its next convening on the matter.
