Harbhajan Singh Urges Rohit Sharma to Play Actively in IPL 2026

The CSR Journal Magazine

Rohit Sharma, the accomplished captain of the Mumbai Indians (MI), is poised to make his comeback in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL), commencing on March 28. Under Sharma’s leadership, MI has clinched the IPL title five times, establishing him as a pivotal figure in the franchise’s success. Ahead of the upcoming season, celebrated former cricketer Harbhajan Singh has expressed his desire for Sharma to be actively involved on the field rather than taking a role as an Impact Player.

Impact Player Rule in the IPL

The Impact Player rule was introduced in IPL 2023, enabling teams to substitute one member of the starting eleven with one of five designated substitutes at any point during a match. This rule significantly enhances strategic options, allowing teams to bolster their batting or bowling line-up with a 12th player capable of contributing fully in terms of both batting and bowling. The introduction of this tactical element has added a new layer of complexity to the game.

Harbhajan’s Perspective on Sharma’s Role

Speaking on JioStar, Harbhajan Singh emphasized the importance of having Sharma on the field, highlighting his leadership qualities. Singh noted that although Sharma was utilized mainly as an Impact Player in the previous season, it is crucial for a leader of his caliber to actively participate in matches. He stated, “Rohit Sharma has been used as the 12th man who just bats, but I feel that the kind of leader he has been, a player like him should be on the field.”

Sharma’s Performance in Previous IPL Season

During the last IPL season, Sharma played a total of 15 matches, accumulating 418 runs at an average of 29.86, coupled with an impressive strike rate of 149.29. His top score was 81 runs, which indicates significant contributions despite a rocky start to the season. Notably, he recorded four scores above fifty runs and surpassed the milestone of 7,000 career runs in the IPL during the eliminator match against the Gujarat Titans.

Sharma’s Potential Impact on Hardik Pandya’s Captaincy

Harbhajan Singh further remarked on the potential synergy between Rohit Sharma and the current MI captain, Hardik Pandya. He suggested that Sharma’s experience could be invaluable to Pandya, especially during high-pressure situations. “In tough matches, when you need to take certain calls, when a captain sometimes needs a shoulder to lean on, Rohit Sharma can do that for Hardik Pandya,” Singh explained, underscoring the tactical advantages of having seasoned players at the forefront.
