Gurugram Lift Operator Loses Vision in One Eye After Alleged Assault by Residents

The CSR Journal Magazine

A lift operator in Gurugram, Haryana, has reportedly lost vision in one eye following a brutal attack by a group of residents he aimed to assist during a lift malfunction. The event occurred on June 9 at the Orchard Avenue Society in Sector 93, and it has raised significant concerns regarding the handling of evidence by local authorities.

According to reports, the crisis unfolded when the lift in the society’s I-Tower became stuck with several individuals trapped inside. Upon learning of the situation, Gaurav, the lift operator, allegedly rushed up the stairs to the seventh floor to offer assistance. However, by the time he and his colleagues arrived, the lift had unexpectedly moved down to the ground floor.

In an effort to help the occupants safely exit, Gaurav hurried to the ground floor. However, as soon as the lift doors opened, he was allegedly confronted with hostility from the trapped residents instead of gratitude or inquiries about the malfunction.

Serious Injuries and Hospitalisation

The altercation quickly escalated when Gaurav was reportedly assaulted by the group. Despite attempts by society staff and security personnel to intervene, the main assailant, identified as Bharat, allegedly continued to strike Gaurav with sticks. The violence led to severe injuries, and the victim has been reported to have suffered permanent loss of vision in one eye due to the attack.

Following the incident, Gaurav was initially taken to a government hospital in Gurugram for treatment. Subsequently, he was referred to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi for specialised care. His condition is now said to be stable, though medical professionals have yet to provide an official statement regarding the full extent of his injuries.

The attack has drawn widespread criticism, not only for its brutality but for the circumstances surrounding the assault and the subsequent delay in accessing crucial evidence.

Legal Actions and Investigation Challenges

In response to Gaurav’s complaint, local police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) and apprehended Bharat as the main accused. Investigators are also looking into the possibility that additional individuals may have been involved in the attack, and efforts are ongoing to identify any accomplices.

The unfolding investigation has attracted heightened scrutiny due to issues related to the availability of CCTV footage from the incident. Authorities have noted that the maintenance company responsible for maintaining the society’s lift system has not yet handed over the relevant surveillance footage, now a week after the assault.

This lack of evidence complicates the investigation and raises questions about accountability. The police have issued further notices to the maintenance department, urging them to provide the necessary footage at their earliest convenience. Investigators continue to explore not only the events leading up to the attack but also the delays in retrieving potentially vital recordings that could aid in the case.
