Gujarat Makes Significant Progress in TB Eradication Efforts, Achieves 94% Treatment Targets

The CSR Journal Magazine

Gujarat is moving closer to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a Tuberculosis-Free India, having achieved 94 percent of the TB registration and treatment goals outlined by NITI Aayog. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the state has reached notable milestones in its fight against this infectious disease, as detailed in a recent announcement from the Gujarat Health Department.

TB Case Detection and Treatment Statistics

With a target to identify 140,000 tuberculosis cases, the state successfully registered 131,801 individuals. The efforts did not stop at detection; they advanced through to treatment as well. Out of those who were identified, 125,301 patients were put on immediate treatment protocols. Remarkably, 121,912 individuals completed their treatment, resulting in a recovery rate of 91.74 percent.

Financial and Nutritional Support Initiatives

The Gujarat government is committed to supporting patients through financial and nutritional assistance. Recognizing the economic challenges that prolonged treatment can impose, the state has subsidized the treatment costs significantly. In 2025, Rs 49.10 crore was disbursed to 92,921 patients. Additionally, through the Nikshay Poshan Yojana, patients receive a monthly stipend of Rs 1,000, intended to sustain their nutritional needs during the healing process.

Community Involvement in Healthcare Support

Community support has played a vital role in the fight against tuberculosis in Gujarat. As part of the Prime Minister’s TB-Free India Campaign, the state has successfully engaged the community by registering 31,058 Nikshay Mitras, who act as volunteers and sponsors. These volunteers, numbering 10,682, have distributed over 449,000 nutrition kits to patients, further enhancing Gujarat’s reputation as the top-performing state in community-driven nutritional aid.

Grassroots Efforts and Intensive Screening Campaign

Instead of waiting for patients to seek treatment, the government has proactively initiated measures at the grassroots level. This includes launching the “100-Day Intensive TB Eradication Campaign” in December 2024, involving extensive door-to-door and community screening initiatives. As of March 20, 75.39 lakh individuals have undergone tuberculosis screening, leading to the identification of 163,426 new patients. This proactive approach has seamlessly integrated these individuals into an effective treatment framework, thereby preventing the disease from further compromising their health or spreading in their communities.

Comprehensive Approach to Tuberculosis Eradication

Through a combination of clinical effectiveness, financial support systems, community mobilization, and early detection strategies, Gujarat is not merely treating tuberculosis; it is establishing a structured and replicable approach to entirely eliminate the disease. The state’s comprehensive efforts highlight its dedication to public health and the eradication of tuberculosis.
