Gujarat Couple Allegedly Killed Three Women, Hiding One Body in Cement-Filled Drum

The CSR Journal Magazine

A 70-year-old woman in Gujarat reportedly disappeared during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2022. Her family was informed that she had been transferred from a hospital to a crematorium. Years later, police unearthed a cement-filled drum within the courtyard of her home, where they found her remains. This discovery prompted further investigations by the Ahmedabad Police, which subsequently linked two additional murders to the same couple, Madhavdas and Urmila.

Details of the Murders Uncovered

The deceased woman identified in the blue drum was Shantaben Vasava. Investigations by the police revealed that Shantaben was not the only victim; they uncovered the murders of two other women, Bhagwati Vasava—Urmila’s sister—and Manjulaben Sadhu, who was Madhavdas’s mother. Authorities stated that all three women were allegedly suffocated before their bodies were disposed of in various manners.

Shantaben’s remains were found in the cement-filled drum, while Bhagwati’s body was buried separately. Manjulaben’s body, having been cremated, was discovered in a different location. According to police reports, the alleged method of disposal signified a pattern of concealment executed by the couple.

This case came to public attention when Madhavdas approached the Ahmedabad Police, alleging that his estranged wife and her cousin had conspired to murder Shantaben. Despite his claim, investigators noted inconsistencies in Madhavdas’s statement, prompting a deeper inquiry into the allegations. This process revealed significant discrepancies in his account.

Allegations of Conspiracy and Truth Revealed

Following the police investigation, Madhavdas reportedly confessed that both he and Urmila had killed Shantaben, as well as the two other women. Police indicated that the couple had been living apart due to a domestic dispute, and Madhavdas was allegedly motivated by anger that Urmila had left with their son, as well as valuables including jewellery and cash.

The police further alleged that the couple exploited the circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic to mask Shantaben’s death. They purportedly told family members that she had been cremated immediately after being taken from the hospital, thus concealing the truth of her death.

After Madhavdas’s confession, authorities took the pair to the location where Shantaben’s body was buried. The investigation team removed a cement slab covering the spot and excavated approximately four to five feet into the ground, leading to the recovery of the blue drum containing Shantaben’s remains. The police detailed that they had placed Shantaben’s body inside the drum, mixed cement with water, and subsequently buried it in a concealed pit.

Further Investigation Led to Multiple Discoveries

The investigation into Shantaben’s murder also revealed circumstantial evidence regarding the deaths of Bhagwati and Manjulaben. Authorities stated that Bhagwati, who had been suffering from tuberculosis, was allegedly smothered with a pillow prior to her body being disposed of. Similarly, Manjulaben, who had suffered paralysis, was also alleged to have been suffocated with a pillow; her body was subsequently cremated. The forensic analysis of Shantaben’s remains has been initiated for further examination to ascertain all relevant details surrounding the case.
