Gujarat CM Approves ₹1185 Crore for Road Infrastructure Upgrade in Surat Economic Region

The CSR Journal Magazine

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel of Gujarat has sanctioned road infrastructure projects worth ₹1185 crore aimed at enhancing connectivity in the Surat Economic Region (SER), an important economic hub in South Gujarat.

This initiative is part of a broader vision for ‘Viksit Bharat @2047’ as advocated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, focusing on the development of ‘Viksit Gujarat @2047’ during the Amrit Kaal period.

Gujarat State Institution for Transformation

To ensure comprehensive growth, the Chief Minister established the Gujarat State Institution for Transformation (GRIT), which has suggested long-term development strategies grounded in infrastructure, innovation, individual empowerment, and institutional strengthening.

GRIT has quickly devised Regional Economic Master Plans targeting six growth centres across the state to promote balanced development. The approved ₹1185 crore will fund the first phase of road infrastructure upgrades in the Surat Economic Region.

SER- Surat, Bharuch, Navsari, Valsad

The SER includes multiple districts such as Surat, Bharuch, Navsari, Valsad, Tapi, and Dang, which collectively account for over 35 percent of Gujarat’s economic output. The Chief Minister’s resolve to achieve tangible outcomes aligns with the mantra ‘Je Kahevu Te Karvu,’ reflecting a commitment to fulfilling promises made to the public.

As part of the initiative for a developed Gujarat by 2047, the Chief Minister has outlined plans to bolster the state’s economy, encapsulated in the theme “Earning Well – Living Well.” The Surat Economic Region is set to play a critical role in this economic framework, being earmarked as a significant area for future growth.

₹1185 crore investment

The ₹1185 crore investment will facilitate 24 road infrastructure enhancement projects covering approximately 383 kilometres across five SER districts. Improved road networks are expected to enhance connectivity between key industrial zones and Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) areas in Surat, Tapi, Valsad, Bharuch, and Navsari, facilitating better logistics and mobility for goods and labour.

Industries such as textiles, chemicals, petrochemicals, and diamonds will particularly benefit from enhanced road infrastructure. Direct advantages are anticipated for sectors including fisheries, Hazira Port, sugar processing, Sumul Dairy, papad production, mining, and lignite ventures. Strengthening connectivity to GIDC locations such as Kadod, Kadodara, Jolva, Mangrol, Kosamba, and Tadkeshwar is expected to stimulate further industrial growth and opportunities.

Enhanced road links will also expedite the transportation of agricultural products, enabling farmers to reach markets more efficiently. This improvement is anticipated to significantly aid growth within the agricultural sector.

Tourism

Tourism is another sector set to see positive impacts from infrastructure upgrades. Enhanced road access will simplify travel to important religious destinations in South Gujarat, including Siddhnath Mahadev Temple, Shabari Dham, Pandav Gufa, Anjani Kund, and the Sanjan ni Agiyari (Parsi Fire Temple). Additionally, access to eco-tourism sites like Mahal, Saputara, and Wilson Hills is expected to improve, thereby fostering tourism in the region.

In the Surat Economic Region, traditional industries such as diamonds, textiles, petrochemicals, and fisheries are prevalent. The upcoming infrastructure developments are also expected to open doors for newer sectors including semiconductors and green hydrogen, thereby generating substantial job opportunities for the youth.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel envisions the SER as a key driver of economic progress, contributing over 35 percent to the state’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) as part of plans to create a $3.5 trillion economy by 2047.

The Chief Minister’s endorsement of these road infrastructure enhancements serves as a catalyst for infrastructure-led economic growth, paving the way for the region to achieve important milestones in inclusive and sustainable development.
