Fridge Explosion Disfigures Teen’s Face: Survives 2.5-Hour Surgery After 108 Facial Fractures in MP

The CSR Journal Magazine

A 14-year-old boy from Katni district in Madhya Pradesh narrowly survived a freak household accident after a refrigerator exploded when he opened its door. The incident occurred on November 5 while the teenager, Aryan Mishra, was at home with his mother. The sudden blast caused severe injuries to his face, leaving him unconscious and critically wounded.

Hearing the loud explosion, Aryan’s mother rushed to the room and collapsed after seeing her injured son. Neighbours, alerted by the noise, rushed in and found both mother and child unconscious.

Rushed to Hospital, Condition Turns Critical

Aryan was first taken to a private hospital in Katni, where doctors described his condition as extremely serious. His father, Vivek Kumar Mishra, an Assistant Sub-Inspector with the Madhya Pradesh Police, was immediately informed. Doctors advised shifting the boy to Jabalpur for advanced medical care.

Within about 90 minutes, Aryan was transported by ambulance to Baderia Metro Hospital in Jabalpur for emergency treatment.

Doctors Perform Life-Saving Surgery

At the hospital, a team led by ENT specialist Dr Rahul Chaturvedi and plastic surgeons assessed the injuries. Doctors found extensive facial damage and breathing difficulties, requiring immediate intervention. Aryan was placed on a ventilator, and an emergency surgery lasting over two hours was performed to stabilise him and repair multiple facial fractures.

Medical staff said the operation was highly complex, but timely treatment proved crucial in saving the teenager’s life.

Recovery Begins After Critical Phase

Aryan remained on ventilator support for three days following surgery. His condition began to improve on November 8, after which he was gradually taken off life support. Doctors say he has started taking liquid food and is expected to begin speaking soon, though full recovery will take time.

Old Appliance Suspected as Cause

According to Aryan’s father, the refrigerator involved in the incident was nearly 15 years old and had undergone multiple repairs. He believes a technical fault and gas buildup inside the freezer may have triggered the explosion. The family had reportedly planned to replace the appliance in the near future.

“Ice used to build up in the freezer, so we would switch it off for hours. The controller was also faulty,” he said.

He believes the explosion happened because of gas trapped inside the ice compartment. “We had planned to buy a new fridge soon, but this incident happened before that,” he added.

The incident has raised concerns over the safety of ageing household appliances and the importance of regular checks.
