Fat Dogs of Delhi: Unique Voting Event Sees Delhiites Vote for Their Favourite Dogs

The CSR Journal Magazine

Delhi witnessed a one-of-a-kind voting event on September 30, where citizens cast their votes for their favourite fat dogs. The contest, dubbed the Fat Dogs of Delhi, has captivated the interest of many, resulting in significant participation from locals of all ages. This unconventional election involved four-legged candidates, transitioning from an Instagram sensation to a physical voting affair.

Polling booths were set up in various locations, including a prominent site at Aku’s burger shop in Vasant Vihar. This initiative allowed people to engage more directly with the competition, providing a lively atmosphere brimming with excitement. Participants used sticky notes to submit their candidate choice, receiving a star sticker as a reminder of their vote, rather than the typical inked finger used in conventional elections.

Many visitors reported impulse decisions to attend the polling stations, further contributing to the lively mood. The event turned into a meeting point for friends and families, fostering connections and conversations centred around a light-hearted competition.

A Community Event Beyond Voting

Attendees at the polling station remarked that they were there for more than casting their votes. For some, such as Oindrila and Shruti, it served as an unexpected conversation starter, rekindling friendships during a shared interest in the contest. Others, like siblings Charul and Divyangshu, established a bonding activity by voting for their favourite dogs together each evening.

Spontaneity characterised much of the attendance. Young voter Aryan, aged 20, expressed enthusiasm by stating he had followed the competition since its inception. His friend Adya, who had only recently discovered the event, was impressed by how seriously people were taking it, which encouraged her to participate as well.

The atmosphere was filled with excitement as participants noted the significance of enjoying a shared spectacle. This engagement extended across different generations, with older individuals, such as 54-year-old Vipul, joining the fun out of curiosity about the younger crowd’s enthusiasm.

Concerns Regarding Animal Welfare Arise

Responses to the contest were not universally positive, however. Concerns were raised regarding the health implications related to the promotion of canine obesity, particularly after the reported deaths of two dogs involved in the competition. Some voters, like Shruti, acknowledged the aesthetic appeal of the contest while emphasising the need for awareness surrounding canine health issues.

Amidst these concerns, supporters argued that the contest helped draw attention to local stray dogs and encouraged the community to engage with the animals in their environment. They highlighted the importance of fostering empathy and care for neglected dogs, contributing to an uplift in public awareness around the issue.

The contest’s founder, who wished to remain anonymous, indicated a commitment to animal welfare despite criticism. She shared that funds raised during the event would be directed towards supporting local NGOs and promoting well-being for street dogs. Her intention was to create a sense of community through this light-hearted competition, transforming online interaction into real-world engagement.

Excitement for Results and Future Implications

The event, carried by a sense of joy and community spirit, shifted the focus from political tensions to a more enjoyable and compassionate subject: dogs. Although the final results are awaited, initial observations suggest that Gola is a popular candidate among voters.

In a competition devoid of traditional campaigning or political promises, attendees found joy in simple interactions, supporting a cause that resonates deeply within the community. While social media may have ignited interest, the event has fostered discussions about care and responsibility in pet ownership.

The Fat Dogs of Delhi phenomenon has not merely entertained but has prompted a broader dialogue on animal welfare and community engagement, teasing out meaningful connections between people and their furry companions.
