Expired Dairy, Unclean Food Found at 36 Karnataka Railway Stations in Food Safety Drive

The CSR Journal Magazine

A recent food safety inspection conducted at railway stations across Karnataka has highlighted several serious violations regarding food quality and hygiene. The initiative, aimed at assessing food handling practices, was carried out on August 20. Officials inspected 112 food establishments located within 36 railway stations, including major locations such as Bengaluru (KSR), Yeshwanthpura, and Mysuru.

The inspection focused on various parameters, including food quality, hygiene practices, labelling, and food storage methods. Authorities reported alarming findings, including the suspected use of non-permitted food colours and the presence of expired dairy products.

Serious Violations Identified Across Establishments

During the inspection, officials discovered multiple breaches of food safety norms at various establishments. There were alleged instances of non-permitted food colours being used, with yellow food colouring in jalebis and pink colouring in khoa peda noted particularly concerning. Such violations raise significant concerns regarding the safety of food items served to passengers.

At a railway station in Haveri district, the inspection team recovered expired packets of Nandini curd and Dodla standardised milk. Additionally, inspections at hotels within railway stations, particularly the one inside KR Puram, revealed unsanitary conditions affecting food preparation and service.

In Mysuru Railway Station, inspectors found idlis being made using plastic materials, which is against recognised food safety standards. The presence of expired food items in the kitchens further attracted scrutiny and raised questions about the management of food establishments.

Steps Forward for Enhancing Food Safety Standards

The inspection’s findings will be formally reported to railway authorities and the designated officers responsible for food safety. Officials indicated that appropriate legal actions will be initiated against food business operators identified as violating food safety regulations. This proactive approach aims to hold establishments accountable and ensure compliance with hygiene standards.

This inspection is part of a broader initiative to fortify food safety standards within railway stations and the catering services provided onboard. Authorities are committed to enforcing strict compliance with food handling and hygiene regulations, which is crucial for the safety of passengers using the railway network.

As a result of these inspections, they aim to implement more rigorous monitoring of food quality in the future, fostering a safer dining environment for travellers. By addressing these violations decisively, officials aim to prevent similar issues from arising in the future and ensure that all food served in railway premises meets acceptable safety standards.
