French President Emmanuel Macron, during his address at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, described the state of affairs in Gaza as “shameful.” He questioned the credibility of the international community amidst the ongoing crisis, highlighting the lack of effective humanitarian aid delivery despite claims of peace. Macron stated, “What is our credibility worth if we remain inactive on Gaza?” emphasising the dire need for action.

Furthermore, he pointed out that the measures taken thus far have failed to ease the humanitarian situation, drawing attention to the weakening response from global leaders. Macron expressed concern that the ongoing conflict has not only jeopardised the lives of those in Gaza but has also posed challenges to broader regional stability.

Concerns Over Strait of Hormuz

Macron also addressed issues concerning the Strait of Hormuz, urging that it should not be utilized as a means of “blackmail.” He articulated the significance of reopening this vital waterway for maritime navigation, stating that it is of utmost importance to all nations involved. “The reopening of the Hormuz Strait is a priority, and the respect of international law is also a priority,” he said, underscoring the need for cooperation among nations.

His remarks came amid escalating tensions in the region, with various stakeholders vying for influence. Macron’s call for the reopening of the Strait ties into a broader narrative of promoting peace and stability in an increasingly volatile context. It reflects his administration’s commitment to ensuring that international laws are upheld to facilitate safe maritime transit.

Meanwhile, Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, reiterated the necessity of diplomacy in light of escalating conflicts in the Gulf. He characterised the ongoing situation as one of the most perilous periods in the region’s history, citing the US-Israel tensions with Iran. Sheikh Tamim expressed confidence in diplomatic solutions leading to a sustainable resolution that would enhance regional security.

Regional Leaders Weigh In on Gaza and West Bank Situations

During the same assembly, Jordan’s King Abdullah II took the opportunity to criticise Israel’s military strategies in Gaza and its policies concerning the West Bank. He urged the global community to take a firmer stance against these actions. Abdullah accused the Israeli government of prolonging hostilities and obstructing peace initiatives spearheaded by US President Donald Trump.

The King pointed out that the Israeli approach is leading to a “fundamental shift” through what he described as “de facto annexation” and escalating violence from Israeli settlers. “President Trump has pushed hard for peace and a path to end this war,” Abdullah remarked, expressing dismay at Israel’s reluctance to accept proposed solutions and its continued offensive actions.

In addition to the statements from Macron and Abdullah, UN Secretary-General António Guterres reiterated that a two-State solution remains the only viable pathway to securing peace and stability for both Palestinians and Israelis. He firmly advocated for the establishment of two independent, sovereign, and democratic states living peacefully side by side, calling this objective clear and vital for the future of the region.
