Elon Musk Labels Instagram As An App For Girls

The CSR Journal Magazine

Elon Musk has publicly characterised Instagram as predominantly an app for women, a comment that continues to fuel discussions surrounding his views on social media. This assertion comes as part of Musk’s ongoing pattern of making provocative statements online, particularly in the last few years.

The tech entrepreneur made this observation while replying to a post on X, where a user expressed their intention to leave Instagram, claiming it was “inherently female” and offered “zero benefit.” Musk’s response was succinct: “Instagram is for girls.” This is not the first occasion on which Musk has articulated this perspective, as he echoed similar sentiments earlier in May 2023.

Musk’s remarks indicate a personal bias against Instagram, which may stem from his investment in his own platform, X. His history of disapproval towards Instagram raises questions about his motivations, particularly given the popularity of certain content types on the app that he seemingly dismisses.

Underlying Reasons Behind Musk’s View

Elon Musk’s views on Instagram seem to be rooted in his perceptions of its content. Earlier this year, he elaborated on these thoughts, mentioning that he had received Instagram profiles from men, leading him to ponder if they were undergoing some form of transition. This comment touches on societal norms regarding gender and social media that Musk has been vocal about, particularly in relation to his estranged daughter, Vivian Jenna Wilson.

Since announcing her transgender identity in 2020, the relationship between Musk and Wilson has reportedly been strained. Musk has previously claimed that his daughter has fallen victim to what he describes as the “woke mind virus,” indicating that he holds strong opinions on gender identity and the related cultural climate.

By portraying Instagram as primarily a platform for women, Musk may also be associating its popular content with characteristics he finds trivial or frivolous. This perception aligns with a broader critique he has of certain social media platforms, which he claims do not foster serious discussions.

Challenging Musk’s Claims with Data

Despite Musk’s comments, data suggests that Instagram is not exclusively female-oriented. According to Statista, by October 2025, the user demographics of Instagram indicates a near parity, with 50.6 per cent of its users identifying as male and 49.4 per cent as female. However, the distribution shifts in the United States, where approximately 55.2 per cent of users identify as women, compared to 44.8 per cent identifying as men.

Moreover, Musk has previously described X as the only serious platform for discourse, asserting that other social media outlets manipulate user engagement behind closed doors. This perspective may feed into his narrative against Instagram, which he seemingly views as lacking in substance.

In conclusion, Elon Musk’s controversial remarks regarding Instagram reflect a combination of personal bias and broader social commentary. His stance appears to be driven by a desire to distinguish his platform as a hub for serious discussions in contrast to what he perceives as the frivolous nature of content on Instagram.
