Education Ministry: NMMSS Scholarship Deadline Extended To October 31

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Ministry of Education has announced an extension for the submission of applications under the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) for the academic year 2026-27, now due by October 31, 2026. This extension aims to provide students with additional time for completing their applications. Interested applicants can submit their applications online via the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) at scholarships.gov.in.

To apply for the scholarship, students must first complete their One-Time Registration (OTR) on the NSP. The portal has been accepting applications for the NMMSS since June 1, 2026. As of September 30, 2026, the NSP has recorded 88,522 fresh applications along with 1,97,133 renewal applications. Those who have already applied are urged to ensure that their applications are verified promptly within the prescribed timeline.

Verification Process and Key Dates

The verification of applications will occur in two phases. The first level of verification, conducted by the Institute Nodal Officer (L1), is set to conclude by November 15, 2026. Following this, the second level of verification by the District Nodal Officer (L2) will take place, with a deadline of November 30, 2026.

It is important for students to be proactive in ensuring their applications are processed in a timely manner. In essence, the revised schedule encompasses the following: applications must be submitted by October 31, 2026, while verification by the Institute Nodal Officer is due by November 15, and the verification by the District Nodal Officer must be finalised by November 30.

This structured timeline is crucial for safeguarding the transparency and efficiency of the scholarship distribution process. The NMMSS plays a significant role in supporting economically disadvantaged students, allowing them to pursue education beyond Class 8. The initiative aims to encourage academic pursuits among deserving candidates, thereby promoting educational equity.

Overview of the NMMSS

The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme is a central sector initiative designed to assist meritorious students from economically weaker backgrounds. It encourages these individuals to persist with their education from Class 9 to Class 12. Each year, the scheme awards one lakh fresh scholarships to eligible students in Class 9 who successfully pass the selection examination held by state and Union Territory governments.

To maintain eligibility, students must meet specific academic benchmarks. Scholarships are renewable from Class 10 through to Class 12, contingent on satisfying prescribed academic standards. Students enrolled in government schools, government-aided institutions, and local body schools are eligible for a financial assistance amount of Rs 12,000 annually.

It is disbursed directly to their bank accounts via the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mechanism. Applicants must achieve a minimum of 55 per cent marks, or an equivalent grade, in Class 7 to qualify for the selection test. For students belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) categories, a relaxation of 5 per cent is granted. Additionally, the yearly income of the applicant’s family must not exceed Rs 3.50 lakh to qualify for the scholarship.
