Dinesh Gundu Rao Slams BJP Over Alleged RSS Influence in History Textbooks Amid NCERT Row

The CSR Journal Magazine

On February 26, Karnataka’s Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao condemned the central government, claiming it is propagating a history of India based on the ideologies of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Hindu nationalism. This statement arises in the context of a dispute concerning a chapter on the judiciary in the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) materials. During an interaction with reporters, Rao addressed the perceived misrepresentation of historical facts and cultural elements by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He stated that the government is attempting to rewrite history by prioritizing an ideological narrative rather than factual accuracy.

Supreme Court Actions on NCERT Textbook Content

Earlier on the same day, the Supreme Court of India issued notices to the Secretary of the Department of Education and Literacy and the NCERT Director, Dinesh Prashad Saklani, instructing them to clarify why they should not face legal consequences for including a sub-chapter titled “Corruption in the judiciary” in the Class 8 Social Science textbook. The court’s bench, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant alongside Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi, declined to halt proceedings even after NCERT apologized for the controversial inclusion. The court emphasized that ignoring its directive would be viewed as interference with the justice system, potentially leading to contempt charges.

NCERT’s Apology and Assurance of Revision

Following the backlash, NCERT expressed regret about the chapter’s content and committed to revising it after proper discussions. The organization acknowledged that the mention of corruption was not suitable for incorporation into educational materials. In addition, the Supreme Court has mandated that NCERT provide an exhaustive account of the Teaching-Learning Materials Committee that approved the chapter, including details about the committee members’ qualifications and their roles.

Calls for Equality in Historical Representation

Minister Rao further criticized the current circumstances, asserting that inaccuracies in historical portrayals reflect a broader trend under the BJP government to manipulate narratives to suit an ideological agenda. He stated, “There are numerous objectionable occurrences currently, skewing the portrayal of history and misrepresenting cultural issues. This may have prompted the Supreme Court’s involvement as the matter is linked to their jurisdiction.” He voiced hopes that equitable standards would be applied across the board regarding educational content and historical accuracy in school curricula.
