Demand to Rename Maharashtra’s ‘Mukhyamantri Ladki Bahin Yojana’, Know the New Update

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a recent political development in Maharashtra, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) legislator Amol Mitkari on Tuesday urged the state government to rename the ‘Mukhyamantri Ladki Bahin Yojana’. He proposed that the welfare scheme be named in honour of late Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, stating that it was initiated under his leadership.

The demand was made on 3 February, prompting political discussions across party lines. Mitkari highlighted Pawar’s role in conceptualising and launching the scheme, and said naming it after him would be a fitting tribute to his contribution.

Background of the Ladki Bahin Yojana

The ‘Mukhyamantri Ladki Bahin Yojana’ is a state-led initiative launched to support the education and social welfare of girls and women from disadvantaged backgrounds in Maharashtra. Introduced under the Mahayuti government, the scheme is aimed at enhancing gender equality and improving socio-economic opportunities for girls.

Under the programme, eligible girls receive financial assistance for education and access to essential services. The initiative has been widely promoted as a major step towards women empowerment by the state government.

Political Implications of the Renaming Proposal

The suggestion to rename the scheme after Ajit Pawar has sparked political debate in the state. While Mitkari praised Pawar’s leadership role in the launch of the programme, opposition parties have criticised the move as an attempt to politicise a welfare scheme meant for public benefit.

Several leaders from other political parties have expressed concerns over linking government schemes with individuals, particularly in cases where the programmes are executed using public funds. The demand has also triggered discussions within the ruling alliance, as leaders deliberate over whether such a renaming would be appropriate or widely accepted.

No Official Decision from State Government Yet

As of now, the Maharashtra government has not made any official announcement regarding a change in the name of the Ladki Bahin Yojana. State officials have not commented on the proposal, and it remains unclear whether the matter will be taken up for formal consideration.

The request has nevertheless added a fresh layer to the ongoing political discourse around welfare schemes and how they are named. The conversation also reflects broader tensions within the coalition government and among parties with differing views on legacy and leadership recognition.

The issue is expected to feature in upcoming legislative discussions, particularly as the state prepares for political activity ahead of elections and budget planning.
