Delhi Police Gets First-of-its-Kind Real-Time Tracking and Management System

The Delhi Police can now check if a vehicle has reached the end of its service life and monitor the availability of arms and munitions in stock during emergencies — all with just one click. The capital city’s police force has established a Central Inventory Management System (CIMS), the first-of-its-kind system that enables real-time tracking and management of every item in stock.

With the help of the Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Applications and Geo-Informatics (BISAG), the police force has developed an application that will be managed by the Delhi Police’s Provisioning and Logistics (P&L) unit. District and unit heads can also update and manage stock using the same system.

DCP Vineet Kumar told national media that BISAG has been working with the Delhi Police for the past year, and the application has been developed for use across six different modules within the force. The Provisioning and Logistics unit is responsible for managing the stock of all Delhi Police resources and their allocation to various district and unit officers.

“Maintaining a record of any item from this stock is a Herculean task in a force of over 90,000 personnel. We have tried to make the system easier and more handy for ourselves and our unit heads,” said DCP Kumar. “Under the supervision of Special CP (P&L) Garima Bhatnagar, three of the six modules have already been launched under CIMS for testing.”

Features

Under the new module, unit heads can now access detailed information about newly acquired vehicles in the force. Officers can also retrieve all data — from the vehicle’s induction to its retirement. Unit heads will also receive notifications when a vehicle reaches the end of its service life.

The CIMS system will also integrate the 11 petrol pumps operated by the Delhi Police for its vehicles. Staff deployed at these pumps will be required to update the application each time a vehicle is refueled. This will enable senior officers to monitor fuel availability at each pump in real time.

Another module is dedicated to managing the stock of arms and ammunition. The Delhi Police currently relies on SLR, INSAS rifles, and AK-47s for long-range engagements, and 9mm Glocks, pistols, and revolvers for short-range operations. With the new CIMS system, authorities can distribute these arms and munitions to unit heads. During emergencies — such as riots or hostile incidents — districts or units can request additional weapons and access surplus stock using the same system.

In addition, the stock of stationery items to furniture will also be monitored and managed. The module also covers wireless sets, mobile phones, and other communication-related equipment used by the force. The renting of gadgets, vehicles, or venues for police or operational purposes will also be managed through the CIMS system.
