The Delhi government is planning to complete the delayed Barapullah phase 3 flyover project by December this year, the Public Works Department (PWD) minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said on Monday.
Sahib discussed the progress in the work while he was on his second visit to the project site. “Our target is to operationalise this flyover by December. It is an important infrastructural project that has suffered from neglect and inaction for several years. Since taking charge, we have prioritised this project and ensured progress on multiple funds,” said PWD minister Sahib Singh.
The new flyover will merge with the existing Barapullah flyover at Sarai Kale Khan and is expected to significantly reduce traffic, along with enhancing east-west connectivity. Once operational, the flyover will use traffic movement at congestion points such as Nizamuddin Bridge, Bhairo Marg, Ashram Chowk and Ring Road.
Approval from the Forest Department
The project was delayed due to a range of issues like land acquisition, the COVID-19 pandemic, seasonal floods and pending forest Department approvals for the relocation of over 250 trees. Although 89% of the project is complete, the Delhi government stated that the work on the remaining part of the flyover is delayed as approval from the forest department to relocate around 200 trees is on.
“We are hopeful that required approvals from the forest department will be received soon, allowing the final phase of construction to commence,” said the PWD minister. He also blamed the delay on the neglect of the previous AAP government, which lacked inter-departmental coordination and administrative efficiency.
