Declared Dead by Madhya Pradesh Government Hospital, Woman Delivers Alive & Healthy Baby in Private Hospital

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a shocking incident a 24-year-old woman narrowly avoided a tragic loss after a government hospital in Satna declared her unborn child dead in womb. The tragedy was avoided after a second opinion at a private hospital which revealed the baby was alive and well. The incident has sparked outrage and prompted an official inquiry into possible medical negligence.

Declared Dead, Advised Abortion

Durga Dwivedi, a resident of Chakera village in Rampur Baghelan, was first admitted to Amarpatan Civil Hospital around 2 AM on the night of July 15–16. This comes after she began experiencing labor pains and contractions. Accompanied by ASHA worker Sheela Tiwari, she was referred to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Government District Hospital in Satna by 4 AM. This was due to her high-risk pregnancy status.

According to reports upon arrival at the district hospital around 7:30 AM, routine blood tests were ordered. At around 9 AM, a senior resident doctor conducted a Doppler test, reportedly finding no fetal heartbeat. A follow-up sonography confirmed the same, showing no movement or signs of life. Doctors then advised the family to proceed with an abortion, believing the fetus was no longer alive.

Family Refuses, Seeks Second Opinion

Unconvinced by the diagnosis, Durga’s husband, Rahul Dwivedi, said the family chose to get a second opinion before making any decision. “It was Durga’s first pregnancy. We couldn’t believe our baby was gone just like that,” Rahul told local media.

The family took Durga to a diagnostic center in Bharhutnagar, where a fresh ultrasound showed the baby was alive and developing normally. Relieved but shaken, they rushed her to a private nursing home for further care.

Healthy Baby Delivered via C-Section

Following the positive scan results, Durga was immediately admitted to the private hospital. Doctors there repeated the sonography, confirming all vital signs were normal. She underwent a cesarean section and delivered a healthy baby boy weighing 3.5 kilograms.

Hospital Faces Scrutiny, Inquiry Launched

The case has raised serious questions about diagnostic procedures at the district hospital. Dr. Manju Singh, in charge of the hospital’s maternity wing, said both the Doppler and sonography had failed to detect a heartbeat, which led to the erroneous diagnosis.

Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Dr. L.K. Tiwari confirmed that an inquiry is underway. “We have written to the Dean of the Medical College and the Civil Surgeon. Strict action will be taken against those found negligent,” Tiwari said.

Internal sources revealed that three doctors are under scrutiny, including the senior resident in radiology who performed the sonography and a gynecologist involved in the diagnosis.

A Similar Case in Bihar

A similar incident recently occurred in Bihar’s Vaishali district. A woman named Kusum was told at a local Primary Health Centre (PHC) that her unborn child was dead. Her mother-in-law, Sukhiya Devi, recalled being devastated by the news.

However, while en route to a private clinic in a hired vehicle, Kusum gave birth to a healthy baby girl. “She was born right there in the Bolero,” Sukhiya recounted. The family paid Rs. 4,000 for the vehicle and its cleaning was a heavy cost for agricultural laborers but were ultimately grateful that their child survived.

As investigations continue in Satna, the mother and her newborn son in Madhya Pradesh are recovering well.
