A tragic incident unfolded in northwest Delhi’s Keshopuram area where a 14-year-old boy reportedly died after accidentally hanging himself while filming a video at home. The Class 9 student was alone in his room when the incident occurred on October 12, prompting his family to rush him to the hospital. Unfortunately, doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Mobile Phone Captured Entire Incident
During the investigation, police recovered the boy’s mobile phone, which had been set up on a stand in the room to record the incident. According to officials, video footage on the phone showed the boy pretending to hang himself, likely in an attempt to create a video possibly for social media.
“Nothing can be heard in the video. We can see the boy looking at himself with the noose around him… As he is looking into the phone (which was recording at a distance), he seems to lose his balance and slip from the chair underneath him. The chair fell behind him, which is why he couldn’t regain his balance,” said a police source familiar with the case.
The police suspect that the child was reenacting a hanging scene. He had used a curtain tied to a ceiling fan and stood on a chair that later slipped, leading to the accidental strangulation. Officials said the act was likely staged multiple times, as several clips were found on the device, suggesting the boy was rehearsing or shooting retakes.
No Foul Play Detected
Initial investigations by the crime and forensic teams have not revealed any foul play. The scene was thoroughly examined, and evidence including the curtain and mobile phone were collected for further analysis. “There were no signs of foul play. The boy was likely shooting a video when he accidentally slipped. His expressions in the footage suggest he was not attempting to take his own life,” said a senior police officer.
The boy’s post-mortem examination was conducted at BJRM Hospital, and his body was later handed over to the family. The Delhi Police continue to examine digital evidence and interview the boy’s family to piece together the full picture. Investigators also noted that the video had no audio, which adds to the complexity of determining the boy’s exact intention.
Family in Shock
The boy lived with his father, a property dealer, his homemaker mother, and an elder sister studying in Class 12. The family is reportedly in deep shock, and counselling support has been arranged to help them cope with the tragedy.
DCP (North West) Bhisham Singh stated, “No foul play has been found in the incident. The scene of crime was inspected by the Crime Team. Exhibits, including the mobile phone of the deceased, have been recovered.”
Investigation Still Ongoing
The case has been recorded as accidental death, although officials are continuing to analyse digital evidence and conduct interviews. Police said they are being cautious not to rule out any angle prematurely.
This incident raises serious concerns about digital safety and the growing trend among teenagers to film risky stunts or dramatised content for online platforms without supervision.
