Ahmedabad is among the fastest-growing cities in India. It has been emerging as an important economic and industrial hub in India. It is the second-largest producer of cotton in India. In this manner, the quotient of social responsibility is significantly high in the citizens as well as the businesses in Ahmedabad.

Against the backdrop of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s optimistic outlook on India’s role in the global landscape, the city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat emerges as a focal point for transformative initiatives, particularly in the realm of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). As the world looks to India as a trusted friend, a pillar of stability, and a burgeoning engine of growth in the global economy, the Vibrant Gujarat Summit held in Ahmedabad earlier this year showcased the state’s commitment to sustainable development.

The summit, attended by delegates from over 130 countries, witnessed Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel extending a warm welcome, emphasizing the event’s international significance. The Chief Minister’s emphasis on the success of India’s G20 presidency and the adoption of the theme ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’ by Prime Minister Modi underscored the commitment to global cooperation.

Notably, Gujarat’s dedication to environmental sustainability took center stage, with Chief Minister Patel revealing that a substantial 50% of the Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) signed during the summit were focused on green initiatives. This commitment aligns with the broader national narrative of positioning India as a responsible global player, contributing not only to economic growth but also to environmental stewardship.

In FY2023-24, Ahmedabad as a district was fourth largest recipent of CSR funds in India, followed by Mumbai, Pune, and Chennai. In Gujarat, it was the highest recipient of CSR funds in the given financial year. The district received Rs 760.99 crore through various CSR initiatives from 1765 companies. The top three areas of focus for the CSR programs were: education, health and gender equality, with an expenditure of Rs 375.82 crore, Rs 223.3 crore, and Rs 80.57 crore respectively in them. The top three spenders in the district included Reliance Retail Limited (Rs 25 crore), Kiran Gems Private Limited (Rs 18.11 crore), and Maruti Suzuki India Limited (Rs 15.44 crore).

In this context, let us look at the top CSR initiatives in Ahmedabad.

Adani Wilmar Limited’s contribution to Mid Day Meal

In a significant boost to the mid-day meal program in Ahmedabad, Adani Wilmar contributed three new food distribution vehicles to The Akshaya Patra Foundation. These vehicles will serve over 6,600 meals daily to 48 schools across the city, reinforcing the joint commitment to nurturing the health and education of children.

In addition to the vehicles, Adani Wilmar has pledged continued support for the mid-day meal initiative, aiming to reach a 1734 number of beneficiaries across 9 schools throughout Ahmedabad. This collaboration underscores a shared vision between Adani Wilmar and The Akshaya Patra Foundation to combat hunger and promote education among school-aged children.

Zero Waste to Landfill Rath Yatra Initiative by Colgate-Palmolive and Nepra Foundation

In a remarkable stride towards environmental well-being, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), in collaboration with Colgate-Palmolive and Nepra Foundation, has set a new benchmark in waste management with the Zero Waste to Landfill Rath Yatra Initiative.  The 147th Rath Yatra, a significant religious event and the second-largest Rath Yatra in the country after Jagannath Puri, exemplified the city’s commitment to efficient and eco-friendly waste management.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has been at the forefront of waste management, with several initiatives under its belt, including the RRR and door-to-door waste collection campaigns under the “My City My Pride” program. This latest initiative reflects AMC’s dedication to ensuring that even large-scale religious events and fairs are zero-waste-to-landfill events.

The 147th Rath Yatra in Ahmedabad attended by lakhs of people saw the successful collection of over 10,000 kilograms of waste in just one day. The waste collected included disposals used to distribute prasad, PET bottles, Multi Layered Packagings, etc. This impressive feat helped mitigate more than 300 kilograms of carbon equivalent emissions. The success of this initiative was largely due to the dedicated efforts of over 100 volunteers of Colgate-Palmolive and Nepra Foundation who accompanied the Rath Yatra, cleaning, sweeping, and collecting waste along the route.

In addition to their hands-on efforts, these volunteers conducted awareness sessions on the importance of proper waste management. Their work did not stop at collection; the waste was meticulously sorted and sent for sustainable disposal, ensuring that nothing ended up in landfills. This initiative aligns perfectly with the broader goals of Nirmal Gujarat and the vision of Swachh Bharat, reflecting a robust collaboration between public and private entities, NGOs, and the city’s community.

Wagbakri Tea’s ‘SMILE’ Initiative

Waghbakri Tea – the famous tea company – in collaboration with IIM Ahmedabad launched the project SMILE. SMILE stands for Student Mediated Initiative for Learning to Excel. It is a project aimed to promote education among underprivileged students. In the program, the children are imparted basic education in specially constructed classrooms below ‘Gyanshakti Marg Flyover’ beside IIM Campus in Ahmedabad.

In the program, volunteers from within the student community at IIM Ahmedabad or other colleges along with hired teachers teach and mentor underprivileged or drop-out students, primarily hailing from the urban slum areas of Jodhpur Gam and Vastrapur Gam in Ahmedabad. The project envisages vocational training, counselling, entrepreneurship development and other activities for the empowerment of children and youth.

SMILE School comprises two classrooms adequate to accommodate about 60 students at a time, with all the necessary infrastructure required to facilitate learning.

Project by KHS Group for Deaf-Blind and MSIs

Deaf-blindness is identified as a different disability with varying degrees of hearing and visual impairment. Individuals with deaf-blindness and MSIs (multi-sensory impairments) also suffer from additional physical and medical conditions and hence experience extreme challenges in performing day-to-day activities. KHS Group worked with Sense India for the CSR programme being implemented in Ahmedabad. It aims to enable people with deaf-blindness and MSIs to reach and maintain their optimal (physical, sensory, intellectual, psychological and social) functional levels. Through the plan, KHS provides educational and rehabilitation services for the PwDs and engages in capacity building of parents, family members and special educators through training. The project also sensitises the government scheme Samagra Shiksha’s teachers and NGO members working in the field of disability in Gujarat. KHS collaborates with Deaf-blind Regional Centres (DbRC), to strengthen, expand and develop opportunities to ensure that a higher number of people with deaf-blindness can lead a good quality life.

The CSR project promotes community-based rehabilitation and inclusion of children and adults with deaf-blindness. The rehabilitation team comprises a special educator, vocational trainer, physiotherapist, and occupational and speech therapist.

Through various awareness sessions, the programme has led to enhanced sensitisation and advocacy for the rights and needs of people with deafblindness and MSIs. Over 180 special educators, 59 para-medical professionals, 28 Anganwadi workers and 30 NGO professions have undergone capacity building training in 2019. Approx. 241 teachers associated with the Samagara Shiksha mission have been trained for the identification and inclusion of children with deaf-blindness in mainstream schools.

Cadila Pharma’s Kaka-Ba Hospital

Kaka-Ba Hospital is the CSR initiative by Cadila Pharmaceuticals. The hospital was set up in 1985 with a vision for it to play a pivotal role in multi-fold, holistic rural development, impart the latest and quality medical services, create health and hygiene awareness, education and welfare of women and children. In the last three decades of its existence, Kaka-Ba Hospital has been imparting quality healthcare services. To date, the hospital has treated more than 6 lacs patients and has saved hundreds of valuable lives.

Cadila pharma has always been active in terms of its CSR initiatives. At the time of COVID-19, the company was engaged in various initiatives to aid the government in its fight against the pandemic. In the early phase of the pandemic, it collaborated with Gujarat Police and distributed masks and sanitiser bottles to the police team. Later as the food crisis started because of the lockdown, it distributed essential kits to about 400 families. Last year, it collaborated with Akshay Patra Foundation to reach midday meals to about 3000 students at their homes.
