Crew Prevents flydubai Disaster: Netanyahu Praises Heroism, Warns of Repercussions

The CSR Journal Magazine

On September 30, an incident involving a flydubai flight, which was bound for Tel Aviv, turned alarming when the co-pilot allegedly attempted to crash the aircraft. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has since stated that those responsible for the attack would face significant repercussions. He commended the flight crew and passengers, particularly highlighting the actions of Captain Smit Machchhar, who despite being injured, thwarted the potential disaster.

Netanyahu reported that the attacker had reportedly undergone Islamist radicalisation and appeared suicidal during the incident. A disaster was narrowly avoided when passengers, assisted by the captain, managed to subdue the attacker and bring the aircraft to a safe emergency landing at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia. The plane was carrying over 170 individuals at the time.

Flight-tracking data revealed that the aircraft experienced a dramatic altitude drop of more than 14,000 feet in under 30 seconds while flying over Saudi Arabia. Following the emergency landing, the captain and co-pilot received medical treatment for their injuries. They later departed for Abu Dhabi once cleared by medical personnel.

Ongoing Investigations into Motives and Background

Israeli security officials have indicated that initial assessments suggest the co-pilot, identified as an Omani national, acted independently. The investigation is still underway, with both the UAE and Saudi authorities looking into the details surrounding the incident. The UAE has initiated inquiries to determine whether the event was linked to any form of terrorist activity.

Netanyahu further stated that the investigation should provide clarity on the co-pilot’s motives, offering a “pretty good clue” concerning his background. However, he refrained from drawing final conclusions at this stage. Discussions in the Israeli security community are ongoing, as they seek further information from their Saudi counterparts, while Israeli intelligence agencies, including Mossad and Shin Bet, are also involved.

As investigations continue, the Saudi Interior Ministry has publicly acknowledged its collaboration with UAE security teams. Preliminary findings indicate the co-pilot assaulted the captain, necessitating the emergency landing. The authorities have yet to categorically determine a motive behind the incident.

Reactions from Israeli Officials and International Context

UAE and Israeli officials have expressed their views on the unfolding situation, acknowledging that comprehensive assessments are needed before arriving at solid conclusions. Israel’s Ambassador to the UAE, Yossi Shelley, mentioned that a full motive remains undiscovered and that any assumptions would be premature.

Netanyahu remarked on existing diplomatic constraints, noting the difficulties of having pilots from nations lacking formal relations with Israel. He commented on broader geopolitical tensions, including queries about Iranian involvement, but stated it was too soon to make any determinations. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz labelled the co-pilot a terrorist based on preliminary information, indicating intentions to crash the aircraft.

The incident has amplified security concerns in Israel, especially with the upcoming national elections. Coupled with the backdrop of recent hostilities linked to Iranian activities, the situation remains precarious. Netanyahu and Modi both recognised the bravery displayed by the flight crew and passengers, with moments of heroism emerging amidst chaos, including passengers who assisted in restraining the attacker.
