CPI(M) to hold rally in Agartala against ‘rising fundamentalism’ in Bangladesh

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has announced a rally in Agartala on December 26 to protest what it described as the growing influence of fundamentalist forces in Bangladesh, warning that such developments could pose a serious threat to India’s Northeast.

Leader of the Opposition in the Tripura Assembly and CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury said radical elements in Bangladesh were becoming increasingly vocal and were directly targeting India.

“What happened in Bangladesh in July last year was an internal matter of that country, but the recent activities of radical forces across the border cannot be ignored,” Chaudhury told reporters.

He alleged that some fundamentalist groups were openly issuing threats to annex parts of India’s Northeastern region. “We strongly condemn these activities, which are detrimental to the safety and sovereignty of the region. The party will organise a rally on December 26 to protest the actions of these radical forces,” he said.

According to CPI(M) leaders, the December 26 rally will aim to raise public awareness about the potential security implications of rising extremism in neighbouring Bangladesh and to press for stronger measures to safeguard the Northeast.

Attack on BJP-TMP alliance

Chaudhury also launched a sharp attack on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ally, the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), accusing them of infighting despite being partners in the state government.

He claimed the clashes between the two parties were driven by competition to control funds of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).

“The clashes between the BJP and TMP are taking place over the looting of funds meant for tribal welfare. The TMP has been looting these funds, and now the BJP wants its share, leading to attacks and counter-attacks in tribal belts,” he alleged.

Clashes ahead of tribal council polls

Several incidents of clashes between supporters of the BJP and TMP have been reported in recent months, particularly in tribal-dominated areas of the state. These incidents have heightened political tension ahead of the elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council.

Elections to the TTAADC are scheduled to be held in March next year.
