The harassment and molestation of two young students in Bihar’s Jamui district have led to sharp criticism of the BJP-led state government by Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). This follows the circulation of a distressing video on social media, which has provoked public outrage. Both opposition parties accuse the ruling government of inadequately addressing issues of women’s safety.

The incident reportedly occurred on 19 September at 7 pm on the Lakhisarai-Jamui border. Following the video’s emergence, authorities have launched an investigation. Jamui Superintendent of Police Vishwajeet Dayal confirmed that three individuals have been arrested, while efforts to apprehend additional accused depicted in the footage are ongoing.

Dayal also mentioned that a Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by a female officer, has been established to conduct thorough investigations. Based on evidence gathered from the video, details surrounding the victims and the incident are being scrutinised.

Investigation Details and Arrests Made

According to SP Dayal, the police’s response to the viral video commenced promptly after they received it. Witnesses had reported the involvement of six or seven individuals, with one individual notably identified as the primary offender, whom authorities are actively seeking.

An FIR has been filed, detailing charges of molestation and indecent behaviour. The police are utilising the footage to identify and detain other suspects. In the effort to maintain community safety, law enforcement officials have assured the public of continual raids until all involved parties are arrested.

As the plight of the victims gained national attention, Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, publicly condemned the incident, labelling it as deeply disturbing. He raised concerns regarding the apparent delay in apprehension and the safety of women in public spaces, demanding immediate accountability from the state authorities responsible for public safety.

Political Reactions and Statements from Leaders

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also weighed in, criticising the ruling BJP’s stance on women’s rights and demanding accountability from those in power. He indicated that such incidents reveal the hypocrisy of the BJP’s campaigns promoting women’s empowerment. Similarly, Tejashwi Yadav, Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, expressed his dismay at the situation, highlighting a broader pattern of rising violence against women.

Yadav asserted that the present government has lost its sense of responsibility, leading to lawlessness within the state. He articulated a pervasive fear among women in Bihar, emphasising that many feel unsafe regardless of the time of day. This sentiment underscores criticisms of existing governmental and police practices, which many allege focus on suppressing cases rather than delivering justice.

In response, representatives from the ruling coalition defended the government’s actions as timely and indicative of a commitment to ensuring safety. Umesh Singh Kushwaha of JD(U) remarked on the sensitivity displayed by the government regarding such incidents, contrasting it with prior administrations. Bihar Minister Shreyasi Singh described the situation as unfortunate and accused the opposition of using it for political manoeuvring.

Regulatory Bodies Intervene Amidst Public Outcry

The National Commission for Women and the Bihar State Commission for Women have both taken notice of the incident, demanding comprehensive and unbiased investigations. Commission Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has called for the prompt registration of FIRs to ensure that all implicated individuals are held accountable. The Bihar State Commission for Women’s Chairperson, Apsara Mishra, also highlighted her communications with local authorities to address the situation effectively.

The tension surrounding this incident reflects broader societal concerns about the safety of women in Bihar and the proactive measures that need to be implemented to combat such harassment. These ongoing investigations aim to restore public confidence in the law and order situation while addressing the pressing issue of women’s safety in the region.
