Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath delivered pointed criticism of the Samajwadi Party (SP) on Monday, asserting that the party reacts with as much annoyance to the mention of Lord Ram as Mughal emperor Babur did. Adityanath’s comments were made during a gathering of ‘Shakti Kendra’ convenors from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the western region of the state.

The event featured the presence of BJP national president Nitin Nabin. During his speech, Adityanath accused the SP, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), and Congress of engaging in dynastic politics and perpetuating caste-based divisions. He alleged that these political parties had transformed governance into a tool for self-serving interests rather than serving the public.

The Chief Minister’s remarks highlight a broader critique of the political landscape in Uttar Pradesh. Adityanath remarked, “The SP gets as irritated at the mere mention of the name of Lord Ram as Babur did,” suggesting that the opposition’s resistance to religious sentiment reflects a deeper conflict over India’s cultural values. He called for unity among BJP supporters to counter such sentiments, referencing the significance of Lord Hanuman’s devotees in responding to what he termed Babur’s legacy.

Allegations of Hindrance to Religious Events

The Chief Minister also accused the SP of obstructing religious events, asserting that such actions undermine the spiritual and cultural fabric of the nation. In his address, he underscored the implications of political obstructionism for India’s public life and religious expressions. Adityanath claimed that the ongoing trends of dynastic power and casteism were generating a self-serving political atmosphere, which he believes detracts from genuine governance.

Eco-political concerns were also factored into Adityanath’s discussion as he blamed the SP, BSP, and Congress for the prevailing caste and dynasty politics that he suggested has plagued the country. According to him, this trend perpetuates obstacles to communal harmony and national development.

At the same time, Adityanath highlighted the initiatives undertaken by the current government, aiming to transform India’s societal mindset. He mentioned significant religious heritage projects such as the Kashi Vishwanath Dham and the construction of the Lord Ram temple at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi in Ayodhya, emphasising a national effort to reconnect with India’s cultural heritage.

Emphasis on New India Initiative

In elaborating his vision for a ‘New India’, Adityanath expressed pride in the government’s commitment to reviving India’s traditions and addressing historical grievances. He stated that this initiative under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership aims to eliminate a mindset of servitude and foster national pride in cultural practices.

Adityanath noted that the government is actively working on various projects aimed at beautifying and revitalising historic regions such as Mathura and Vrindavan, further reflecting the administration’s priorities in cultural heritage. By connecting these initiatives to broader national progress, the Chief Minister framed the BJP’s agenda as aligned with revitalising India’s cultural identity.

The confluence of religious and heritage projects with political discourse indicated a deliberate effort by Adityanath to merge governance with cultural revitalisation, thereby appealing to BJP’s core support base. As such, his statements underscore ongoing political divisions and the contested nature of India’s cultural identity in contemporary governance.
