CM Dhami Announces Extra Relief for Hail-Hit Farmers in Uttarakhand

The CSR Journal Magazine

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has declared additional financial support for farmers impacted by recent hailstorms. This initiative aims to provide relief to those whose agricultural, horticultural, and sugarcane crops have suffered damage. The assistance will be equivalent to the compensation amount outlined in existing disaster relief norms, in addition to the standard compensation already prescribed by the state government.

The chief minister has instructed relevant officials to implement these measures promptly. The government emphasised that the additional support is intended to alleviate the financial strain caused by crop losses and to enable farmers to continue their agricultural and horticultural activities in the upcoming season.

Details regarding the number of farmers eligible for this relief, the total financial allocation, and the specific districts affected by the hailstorms have not been disclosed by the state government. This lack of information leaves some uncertainty regarding the extent of the assistance being provided.

Electricity Bill Deferment for Farmers

In a bid to ease the immediate financial burden on affected farmers, the Uttarakhand government has announced a deferment of electricity bill payments for the months of October, November, and December. This measure is designed to provide temporary relief as farmers recover from the damage to their crops.

The deferment of electricity bills is a significant step, although the announcement does not clarify how many farmers will benefit from this relief. The government’s intention is to support farmers during this challenging period, allowing them some breathing room as they navigate the aftermath of the hailstorm.

While the announcement has been made, the specifics regarding the implementation process and the criteria for eligibility for the electricity bill deferment remain unclear. Farmers are awaiting further details from the government on how these measures will be operationalised.

Proposed Relief for Kisan Credit Card Loans

The Uttarakhand government has also indicated its intention to approach the Centre for relief concerning Kisan Credit Card (KCC) loan repayments. A formal request will be sent to the Union finance ministry, seeking a three-month deferment of repayment obligations for farmers affected by the hailstorms. This proposed loan relief is contingent upon the response from the central government.

The announcement does not specify whether interest payments would also be deferred or which specific loan accounts may qualify for this relief. KCC loans are crucial for farmers as they provide necessary credit for various agricultural needs. If approved, the temporary deferment of repayments could give eligible farmers additional time to manage their financial obligations following the loss of crops.

Chief Minister Dhami reiterated the state government’s commitment to safeguarding farmers’ interests and assisting them in overcoming challenges posed by natural disasters. The combination of additional compensation and short-term payment relief aims to address both the immediate financial pressures resulting from crop damage and the ongoing need for farmers to maintain their agricultural operations.

However, the government has yet to clarify how it will assess eligible crop losses or the timeline for disbursing the additional assistance. The overall package announced by the state government seeks to support farmers in their recovery from the hailstorm’s impact while ensuring that agricultural and horticultural activities can continue without significant disruption.
