Six engineers from Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan and Peyjal Nigam faced suspension following a serious incident involving contaminated drinking water in the Jyolikot area of Nainital district. The situation has led to the deaths of two individuals, prompting immediate disciplinary action as directed by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.

The decision was made based on a report from the district administration detailing negligence in the engineers’ official duties. The engineers who have faced suspension include various ranks from both organisations, with positions ranging from the in-charge Superintending Engineer of Jal Sansthan in Haldwani to multiple engineers in Peyjal Nigam, Bhimtal. The repercussions for these officials reflect a notable response to the public health crisis that has emerged.

Health Crisis in Jyolikot Area

This disciplinary action follows distressing reports of illness linked to contaminated water in Jyolikot and surrounding villages, sparking fears of a potential outbreak of waterborne diseases. Specific villages affected include Beluvakhan, Gethia, Sariyatal, Durgapur, Ganja, Veerbhatti, and Chheena.

The situation escalated significantly when cases of jaundice started to surface, culminating in the tragic deaths of a 16-year-old student and a 26-year-old woman, which has caused alarm among local residents. In response, the Nainital district administration has initiated relief actions. Medical teams have been deployed in seven villages to distribute chlorine tablets and oral rehydration salts (ORS).

Furthermore, eight doctors and an ambulance have been stationed in these areas to provide immediate medical assistance to affected residents. The urgency of the response indicates the severity of the health crisis, as local authorities attempt to manage the situation and prevent additional cases.

Judicial Involvement and Regulatory Actions

The suspensions have occurred amid scrutiny from the Uttarakhand High Court, which on 8 September 2026 expressed concerns regarding the provision of clean drinking water and adequate healthcare in Jyolikot and surrounding areas. The court characterised the situation as an “epidemic” and tasked Nainital District Magistrate Lalit Mohan Rayal with overseeing the relief efforts personally.

During proceedings concerning a public interest litigation, Nainital’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr Rashmi Pant, attributed the outbreaks to contaminated water supplies. The court further mandated that private laboratories would conduct water testing, rather than relying solely on internal assessments, to enhance the reliability of the testing process.

Moreover, the High Court instructed the Jal Sansthan and Peyjal Nigam to ensure that sewage and drinking water lines remain distinct. Inspectors will evaluate potential contamination and sewage leakage throughout Nainital city, with sample collection from multiple locations to assess the ongoing risks to public health.

Govt Commitment to Public Health

The Chief Minister’s Office acknowledged the seriousness of the negligence within drinking water management. Moreover, it will strictly enforce the declarations regarding public health. Officials responsible for overlooking public welfare matters may face significant repercussions as a result of this incident.

The government emphasised that accountability will supersede in all matters concerning public health, with departments involved compelled to act in the best interest of the public. The suspensions of the six engineers were a direct consequence of the report provided by the district administration, reflecting a commitment to rectify the failures that led to this public health threat.

Consequent measures will likely include more rigorous oversight of water quality and health standards in the region to prevent future occurrences, ensuring residents can access safe drinking water.
