Clash in Madurai Leaves Several Injured After NDA Rally Led by Piyush Goyal

The CSR Journal Magazine

A confrontation occurred in Madurai involving supporters from the AIADMK and AMMK, resulting in injuries to one individual after a rally for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Sunday. The altercation erupted as Union Minister Piyush Goyal, AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, and AMMK General Secretary TTV Dhinakaran returned to their hotel following the event.

According to reports, an AMMK member’s vehicle was positioned between the vehicle of former AIADMK Minister KT Rajendra Balaji and that of one of his supporters outside the hotel. The interaction escalated into a clash, during which an AMMK cadre suffered a head injury. Law enforcement was deployed to the scene to manage the situation and restore order.

Political Tensions Rise Within NDA

The incident reveals underlying tensions within the NDA alliance, as TTV Dhinakaran’s AMMK has recently affiliated with the BJP-AIADMK coalition ahead of the upcoming Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections. This shift comes after Dhinakaran was expelled from the AIADMK, subsequently founding his own party. The altercation may signal renewed conflicts between the two factions.

Earlier that day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a significant address at the NDA rally in Madurai, where he inaugurated and laid the foundation for infrastructure projects valued at Rs 4,400 crore. The Prime Minister expressed strong confidence in the alliance, regarding the forthcoming elections as pivotal for the state. He emphasized that “some people are dreaming of returning to power in Tamil Nadu,” suggesting that the scale of support for the NDA would thwart such ambitions.

Upcoming Elections and Political Landscape

Modi characterized the upcoming Legislative Assembly elections as a crucial turning point for Tamil Nadu, asserting that the electorate is determined to oust the current ruling party, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). The PM stated, “They know clearly that only the NDA can bring in change. The next government of Tamil Nadu will be an NDA government.” The Tamil Nadu Assembly, comprising 234 members, is scheduled to hold elections in the first half of 2026.

Under the leadership of MK Stalin, the incumbent DMK government plans to present the ‘Dravidian Model 2.0’ in their campaign against the BJP-AIADMK alliance. Additionally, the entry of actor Vijay with his political outfit Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) could further complicate the electoral landscape, potentially transforming the contest into a three-way battle.

In the previous Assembly elections of 2021, the DMK secured 133 seats, while its coalition partner Congress won 18 seats. Other parties, including PMK and VCK, garnered additional seats, leading the Secular Progressive Alliance to achieve a total of 159 seats. Meanwhile, the NDA was able to claim 75 seats, with AIADMK emerging as the largest party within the alliance, having won 66 seats. These dynamics set the stage for a competitive electoral season in Tamil Nadu.
