The United States and China have reached an agreement to lower tariffs on goods valued at $30 billion. This decision came amid Chinese President Xi Jinping’s recent three-day visit to Washington, as confirmed by both nations. The arrangement involves reductions in tariffs on non-sensitive goods originating from both countries. According to the White House, the tariffs that will be adjusted include American exports.

These include agricultural products, wood, and cosmetics. In return, certain Chinese imports, including small appliances, toys, and decorations, will also see tariff reductions when entering the US market. In conjunction with the tariff agreement, both sides agreed to form a trade council aimed at building upon previous negotiations held in Kuala Lumpur.

This highlights a renewed commitment to enhance trade relations between the two economic powerhouses. The discussions concluded on a note of personal diplomacy, with Trump and Xi focusing on strengthening their bilateral relationship, despite lacking significant public breakthroughs during the summit.

Focus on Artificial Intelligence

In addition to tariff reductions, the two nations have launched a formal dialogue centred on artificial intelligence. This initiative aims to explore both the risks and advantages of AI technology. The first round of discussions is expected to take place in November. Both the US and Chinese governments have agreed to establish a communication channel to address issues related to AI incidents.

During the discussions, the leaders agreed to use the term “super intelligence” in place of “artificial intelligence,” reflecting a desire for improved terminology regarding this rapidly advancing field. China has expressed its appreciation for the US accepting this new terminology and has called for increased exchanges between the two nations as AI technology continues to evolve. This cooperative approach highlights their recognition of the significance of AI in the global landscape.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

As part of the broader dialogue, the US and China have agreed to support one another in hosting significant international events. This includes the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders’ meeting and the G20 summit. Both leaders have confirmed their intention to participate in the respective summits hosted by each nation.

On foreign policy matters, both governments reiterated their commitment to ensuring that Iran abides by agreements regarding its nuclear programme. This consensus reflects a shared interest in maintaining regional stability and preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons.

Furthermore, they agreed that no nation or entity should impose transit tolls on international waterways, a point that underscores their dedication to preserving open navigational routes. This mutual understanding represents a commitment to upholding international maritime law and fostering collaborative trade practices.
