Chhattisgarh’s Rekawaya Village Embarks on Rehabilitation Journey Post-Naxalism With “Sushasan Express”

The CSR Journal Magazine

Rekawaya, located in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region, is entering a transformative phase following the conclusion of a long-standing Naxalite insurgency with the introduction of the “Sushasan Express” initiative. This program, which commenced on January 1, aims to revitalize the village by focusing on education, infrastructure, and connectivity.

Educational Advancements Under “Sushasan Express”

According to Namrata Jain, the Narayanpur District Collector, the initiative has led to the reopening of ten schools and the enrollment of approximately 700 students across 24 institutions. This marks a significant shift from the previous educational management, which was influenced by Naxalite control. Jain highlighted that the government is also enhancing connectivity in the region, specifically through road and internet projects. “We are developing better schools and road connectivity. The National Highway is under construction, which will connect to Maharashtra. Enhancements in mobile and internet connectivity are also underway,” she stated.

Community Participation in Educational Development

A local resident, identified as Pradeep, acknowledged the government’s efforts to stabilize the community after the end of Naxalite activities. He explained that the schools in the village are now managed by a committee formed from 12 nearby villages, replacing the previous systems linked to the Naxal governance. “Development is beginning, but it will take time. Schools were previously operated under the Naxal Jantana government, and since then, improvements have been initiated after police camps were established in the area,” Pradeep added.

Geographical and Developmental Challenges

Rekawaya is situated approximately 150 kilometers from the Narayanpur district headquarters, posing significant accessibility challenges due to its rough terrain. The village had long been isolated, lacking basic infrastructure and facing threats posed by explosive devices and ambushes. This isolation hindered access to education and essential governmental services, resulting in prolonged hardships for the residents.

Trends in Security and Administrative Presence

The local population had historically endured dire conditions due to the stronghold of Naxalite groups, which dictated the socio-economic environment. However, recent coordinated efforts by both central and state agencies have initiated changes in the security landscape. The establishment of police camps in and around Abujhmad has considerably improved safety and security in the area, facilitating a reduction in Naxalite influence.

Infrastructure Improvements Driving Change

The construction of roads connecting Rekawaya has been a pivotal development, making the area more accessible to governmental services and administrative functions. With these advancements, gradual changes are unfolding in the village, paving the way for a more stable and progressive community. While the journey towards full restoration may take time, the “Sushasan Express” initiative serves as a cornerstone in Rekawaya’s recovery and development.
