Chandigarh Police Head Constable Nitin was reportedly shot dead at his residence on Friday morning, an event that highlights the rising violence against police personnel in Punjab. Neighbours heard a gunshot and immediately informed the police. Upon arrival, law enforcement officials found Nitin unresponsive on his bed, suffering from a bullet wound to his head. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A country-made firearm, believed to have been used in the shooting, was discovered at the scene. Nitin was serving in the Accounts Branch at the Chandigarh Police Headquarters at the time of the incident. The victim’s family was present during the occurrence, raising concerns about the circumstances.

Investigation Underway

Chandigarh Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kanwardeep Kaur stated that an investigation has been initiated. When questioned about the potential involvement of Nitin’s son in the incident, the SSP mentioned that it was premature to make any assumptions as the investigation is ongoing. No arrests have been made thus far, and authorities are working to determine the motives behind the shooting.

This incident marks the third attack on police personnel in Punjab within the last month, as tensions continue to escalate. The police department has vowed to uncover the truth behind these violent events and to ensure the safety of its officers. The local community is reportedly in shock over the brutal nature of the crime.

Recent Attacks on Punjab Police Personnel

Only a week prior to Nitin’s death, Assistant Sub-Inspector Harjit Singh was shot and killed while on PCR duty in Amritsar on September 18. Singh was attacked near the Bhagtanwala grain market, further substantiating fears regarding officer safety in the region. Following the incident, one suspect, identified as Deepak Singh, was allegedly killed in a police encounter, while another suspect managed to escape.

Deepak Singh was reportedly linked to a Pakistan-based terrorist, Shahzad Bhatti, raising alarm bells regarding cross-border terrorism and its impact on local law enforcement. The police are conducting thorough investigations into these connections to understand the underlying threats to their personnel.

Another attack occurred on September 11, when ASI Jaswant Singh narrowly survived an assassination attempt while returning home after duty in Ajnala, Amritsar. In this incident, motorcycle-borne assailants fired upon him, grazing his head as a bullet passed through his turban without causing fatal injuries.

Earlier this year, police personnel have faced numerous deadly attacks, including the shooting of ASI Gurnam Singh and Home Guard official Ashok Kumar on February 22 at a police checkpost in Gurdaspur district. Additionally, constable Jagjit Singh was murdered on March 7, and ASI Joga Singh lost his life near Majitha on May 24. These incidents underscore a worrying trend of escalating violence against police in Punjab.
