The CSR Journal Magazine

An assistant sub-inspector of the Punjab Police was shot and injured by three men riding a motorcycle in Amritsar on the evening of Sunday, October 4, 2026. The officer, Sukhchain Singh, is affiliated with the Government Railway Police in the city and sustained a bullet injury to his left arm during the assault. Reports indicate that Singh was returning home after completing his duty when the incident occurred.

According to law enforcement officials, Singh was on his motorcycle when the assailants approached him from behind and opened fire. Following the shooting, the suspects quickly fled the scene. Emergency services were summoned, and Singh was subsequently transported to the Civil Hospital in Ajnala for medical treatment.

Witnesses in the area alerted police authorities regarding the shooting, prompting a rapid response from a police team that arrived to investigate the situation. The police have confirmed that a case has been filed, and inquiries are ongoing, examining various leads surrounding the occurrence.

Context of Recent Violence Against Police Personnel

This incident comes shortly after the tragic killing of another assistant sub-inspector, Harjit Singh, who was shot dead by two motorcycle-borne individuals at the Bhagtanwala grain market. That attack took place during the night of September 18 and early morning of September 19, raising significant concerns regarding the safety of law enforcement officers in the region.

The recent spike in violent incidents has drawn widespread attention, with opposition parties criticising the state government, led by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), for failing to ensure adequate law and order in Punjab. Criticisms have been aimed particularly at Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s administration, labelling the situation as deteriorating and dangerous.

Ravneet Singh Bittu, a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and former Union minister, expressed his concerns over the safety of police personnel in the state. He remarked on the alarming frequency of violent crimes in Punjab, stating, “How many more police personnel will be attacked? What is the Bhagwant Mann government doing?” His comments highlight a growing frustration among political figures regarding the apparent increase in criminal activity, including incidents involving gun violence and extortion.

Government Response and Ongoing Investigations

The Punjab Police have announced that they are actively investigating the latest shooting incident involving Sukhchain Singh and are committed to identifying and apprehending the attackers. Officials have not disclosed potential motives for the shooting, but they are scrutinising various angles to understand the full circumstances surrounding the attack.

While the investigation progresses, concerns remain high among residents and members of the police force alike. Many are questioning the effectiveness of current security measures and the government’s response to escalating violence. The frequency of such attacks is raising urgent discussions about the implications for the safety and operational integrity of police officers serving in Punjab.

Further statements from the state government and police officials are anticipated as developments unfold in this case. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of law enforcement and restoring public confidence in the security framework of the region.
