Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to Visit India from February 26-28

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, is set to begin a three-day visit to India starting February 26, as announced by the Canadian government. This trip marks Carney’s initial visit to India in his capacity as Prime Minister and includes plans for a significant bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 2 in New Delhi. The meeting is anticipated to focus on enhancing ties that have experienced strains due to previous incidents, including the assassination of a Sikh separatist in 2023.

During the visit, various pressing topics are expected to be at the forefront of discussions between the two leaders. These include sectors such as energy, trade, defence, technology, and security. Notably, the leaders aim to assess progress on establishing a framework for a comprehensive economic partnership agreement. Both nations are eager to initiate new negotiations for a trade agreement that aims to facilitate an ambitious target of achieving $50 billion in annual trade by the year 2050.

Uranium Procurement Agreement Anticipated

As part of the visit, a significant 10-year agreement for the procurement of uranium from Canada by India is expected to be finalised. This agreement is seen as a substantial step in strengthening energy collaboration between the two countries. The Canadian government has highlighted that discussions will focus on not only trade but also on fostering new partnerships in technology, artificial intelligence, talent, culture, and defence sectors.

Business Engagements and Investment Opportunities

Carney’s agenda includes meetings with prominent business leaders to explore and identify potential investment opportunities in Canada. The aim is to cultivate new collaborations between businesses from both nations, thereby enhancing economic engagement. The Canadian government emphasised its commitment to establishing a more resilient and independent economy while also diversifying trade relations on a global scale. This visit is seen as an opportunity to strengthen Canada’s presence in the Indo-Pacific region.

Significance of the Indo-Pacific Partnerships

In a statement addressing the broader objectives of the visit, Carney’s office noted that the Prime Minister is travelling not only to India but also to Australia and Japan from February 26 to March 7, 2026. The focus of these visits is to unlock fresh opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses in critical sectors, affirming the importance of these relationships for both Canadian security and economic growth. The visits are viewed as integral in fostering stronger regional collaborations that contribute to shared prosperity in the Indo-Pacific area.
