Building an Inclusive, Sustainable & Resilient Social Impact Sector for the Future

Arthan, a social enterprise that provides capacity building support to social sector organisations, is launching a long term, future-oriented and multi-stakeholder initiative, ‘Building Civil Society Organisations of the Future’. This online to offline initiative begins with a track on ‘The Future of Fundraising’ on June 22, 2020, bringing together a mix of international and Indian donor organisations such as The MacArthur Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation, Michael & Susan Dell Foundation and Ford Foundation, amongst many others. Other tracks include: Future of Jobs (25th and 26th June), Future of Education (3rd July) and Women’s Leadership in the Development Sector (14th July), Urban Cities (30th and 31st July)
The pandemic brought forth the spirit of collaboration of the social sector with a plethora of online convenings and other collaborations and collectives. However, a few questions remained unaddressed. These range from the need for a long term, sustainable and resilient strategy for the impact sector that would include the voices of all stakeholders in the sector – across regions, languages and gender to ensuring accountability by converting these dialogues into action. This initiative will address ecosystem challenges and opportunities, in the wake of the pandemic, in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals, progress towards which has been pushed back due to these unforeseen circumstances. The initiative, which will run from June 2020 to December 2021, is meant to co-create solutions, co-evolve out of the pandemic, and define the future of civil society organisations in India.
The pandemic laid bare the inefficiencies of our healthcare systems and illustrated the lack of preparedness for a crisis of this magnitude, failing our fellow humans, migrant families, who could have been treated with greater dignity and justice, had we prepared better for this disaster. As the lockdowns end and unlocks begin, we need to be better equipped to ensure our societal and economic goals work in tandem and address the need for respectable jobs for all.
The conference will bring together experts, practitioners, and thought leaders from across the impact sector, private sector and government to address key issues in streams including but not limited to urban planning, agriculture & migration, gender, education, violence against women, farmer distress, child protection and the role of the civil society & government, that have been irrevocably affected and need pivoting and strengthening in these times of COVID-19 and the years to come.  This constantly evolving universe will bring together 3000 speakers and build the capacity of 10,000 civil society organisations across sectors, over the next two years. Audiences will include NGOs, practitioners, leaders, job seekers, academicians and many more.
Satyam Vyas, founder & CEO, Arthan says, “The world is reeling under a pandemic and question marks have been placed on the future – of individuals, organisations, countries and the world economy. Conversations about scripting a new normal have become the norm. But we have to script the new normal now, and define it for the next decade if we want to achieve the development goals .”
And with thought, this social impact initiative will have leaders, who have been driving transformational change in civil society, come together to create a collaborative of those working towards accelerating progress, creating a space for dialogue and actionable steps. Through various formats such as panel discussions, masterclasses and roundtables, the virtual conference series will stress upon the need of reimagining the areas of financial management, fundraising, talent management, communication and technology to help the social impact sector pivot in a way that not only allows for organisational continuity but also for organisations to stay on their path of creating long term and sustainable impact.
In the first phase from June-October 2020, Arthan is convening this ecosystem where all social sector leaders voice their opinion, in their languages – leaders who have ‘walked the talk’ time and again and who can guide the sector to move towards the right direction. Some of the notable names include Moutushi Sengupta, MacArthur Foundation; Deepali Khanna, The Rockefeller Foundation; Yamini Aiyar, Centre for Policy Research; Dr Rukmini Banerjee, Pratham; Ashif Shaikh, Jan Sahas; Shrikanth Viswanath, Janaagraha among a long list of more than 200 speakers. The convenings and sessions that are a part of this long term initiative, will be open to people from around the world and will have sessions based on a freemium model.

Environment Friendly Start-ups in India

Atmanirbhar Bharat and its easy money components are encouraging more youth to startup their own businesses, in an effort to solve the problems that are faced by our society in an innovative way. India being a tropical country faces a major brunt of environmental degradation and global warming. Considering this, many startups have shaped their businesses around this and figured out alternatives to be environment friendly. Let us look at some of these green start-ups.

e-BikeGo

The COVID-19 outbreak has instilled fear among Indians of travelling in public transport. With easing lockdown restrictions, many people are needed to start going to work and have no option but to rely on public transport. E-BikeGo is offering an affordable alternative to people in Mumbai, Pune and Bengaluru.
E-BikeGo is an electric bike rental company that has come up with a subscription model for e-scooters. The monthly subscriptions start from Rs 3,600, which is perfect for individuals as well as for companies who provide delivery services. With this, the individuals do not have to invest in a private vehicle of their own, nor do they have to spend heavily on fossil fuels. Not only are these bikes light on the pockets of people, but are also easy on the environment.

Bluecat Paper

Paper is one of the most essential commodities in running the world. While many things are now moving to digital, paper still dominates in most of the interactions. About 3.3 million hectares of forests are cleared every year to make paper from trees. This not only renders wildlife in dense forests homeless but also has adverse effects on the ecosystem.
Bluecat Paper founded by entrepreneur Kavya Madappa, produces paper using secondary agro- and industrial waste like cotton rags, flax, lemongrass, mulberry, rice stubble, coffee husk, banana stumps, coconut husk, and even elephant faeces. Through their operations, startup collects about 20 tonnes of secondary waste from 100 farmers and five factory units each month. In making tree-free paper by upcycling the waste, they also save about 30 tonnes of wood per month and a minimum of 55,000 litres of water a day.

EcoBuddy

Driven by the idea of encouraging people to reduce the use of non-biodegradable products in daily life and a desire to provide alternative products for the same, EcoBuddy came up with environment-friendly products. The company sells items like bamboo toothbrushes, cotton bags, among others, that are sustainable solutions for daily use objects. The products are manufactured by 7 vendors and through them, the company is supporting over 250+ livelihood.

Boss Lady

Makeup is an integral part of women’s lifestyle today. It has now become equivalent to a way of expression for women. Women feel confident and beautiful while wearing makeup. This has given rise to many makeup brands that often resort to cruel testing of products on animals.
With a desire to have a good yet humane and responsible makeup products in the market, Mumbai-based entrepreneur Kajol Mahendra Bafna founded ‘Boss Lady’, a vegan, natural and cruelty-free cosmetics brand in February 2019. Her products are made using ingredients like jojoba oil, sunflower wax, almond oil, calendula wax among others. Since they began their operations, Boss Lady has launched about 15 products that comprise different shades of lipsticks, eyeliners, and highlighters, that provides perfect cruelty-free makeup alternatives to women who can express themselves while feeling the guilt of hurting nature.

UN forum calls for greater investments in statistics to ensure no one, nowhere is left behind post COVID-19

Increasing investments in official statistics as well as empowering users will be a crucial factor to support post-pandemic socio-economic recovery in the Asia-Pacific region, underscored delegates at the close of a United Nations meeting today.
The Asia-Pacific Statistics Week, organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), brought together more than 1000 participants representing governments, national statistics offices, central banks, academia and international organisations. 85 papers from 18 countries and eight international organizations were discussed at the four-day virtual forum.
“Official statistics provide governments, businesses and civil society with the indispensable information they need to make good decisions. And they give people and their representatives the tools to have informed debates, to make choices and to hold decision-makers to account. The Asia-Pacific Statistics Week is a wonderful example of the reach of official statistics in Asia and the Pacific,” shared President of the International Association for Official Statistics John Pullinger.
The forum focused on progress made towards the Asia-Pacific Collective Vision and Framework for Action for advancing official statistics for the 2030 Agenda under five action areas. It discussed empowering national statistical systems to meet urgent and evolving statistical needs by strengthening statistical skills, modernizing statistical business processes, legal and institutional structures, and engaging users.
While the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development has placed greater demand for a wider scope of statistics, many countries in the region continue to struggle with getting the basics such as population and economic statistics right. Participants highlighted the increasing need for regional substantive support in this area, and for more data integration to support analysis of sustainable development issues. They also underscored the importance of engaging users to make national statistical systems more responsive and able to develop strategies for better-informed policy decisions.

Visionary e-learning CSR programmes of Endress+Hauser and Nayara Energy

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) recognised the scope of e-learning long before coronavirus compelled urban schools to take heed of it. Here’s how the visionary e-learning CSR programmes of two companies—Nayara Energy and Endress+Hauser—have transformed education for thousands of students.

What are e-learning CSR programmes about?

e-learning CSR programmes make use of various electronic technologies to give students access to quality education outside a traditional classroom. The beneficiaries comprise children or adults who are otherwise unable to educate themselves either due to poverty or lack of resources.

Gramshiksha (CSR of Nayara Energy)

Nayara Energy owns and operates India’s second-largest single-site refinery. Its education CSR project Gramshiksha aims to ensure inclusive, equitable quality education as well as promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. Most of the children are first-generation learners, and there is a pronounced gender gap with increasing dropout rates for girls. Around 48% of the adolescents drop out and do not study beyond the 8th grade. Through multiple interventions, the project Gramshiksha works towards improving access to education in 15 villages in Gujarat to both, children and adults, covering an age group of 6-35 years.
The CSR project endeavours to improve the quality of primary education through enrolment drives like Shala Praveshotsav, remedial teaching, attendance monitoring, ICT education, and building capacity of teachers and school officials. After the establishment of 16 National Institute Open Schooling (NIOS) centres, providing scholarships (with 75 students given scholarships so far) and promoting ICT education, the project works towards improving access to quality secondary education. It aims to reach out and engage with the community through Gramshiksha centres, awareness campaigns and adult literacy classes to ensure equitable access to functional literacy.
Gramshiksha adopts a multi-pronged approach to improve the level and overall quality of education of the students, teachers as well as community members. Over 1,800 students and 100 teachers have been engaged in programmes for primary education, with all the 18 schools having provisions of computer labs and smart classrooms as part of e-learning CSR programmes.

Free web-based training (CSR of Endress+Hauser)

Endress+Hauser is a Swiss-based globally operating process and laboratory instrumentation and automation supplier. The company has been running e-learning CSR programmes since 2012. It aims to provide free web-based training to engineering students to familiarise them with the latest technologies and principles used for measuring physical parameters such as level flow pressure temperature, water quality analytics etc., for enhanced understanding and implementation of technical training. General classes include classroom teaching of technologies, but there is an imbalance observed in the application of such programmes.
The programme is based on a self-learning process, where various web-based training modules on different technologies, principles, and their applications in major industries such as chemical, life science, food and beverages, oil and gas, power, mining etc., are made available to the students. Students can self-learn through the programme according to their convenience and sit for an online test after completing the module. After completing all the modules, the students receive a certificate from Endress+Hauser. This training method helps them to enhance their knowledge about the latest technology, and use it in future.
The programme has helped students understand how new developments can be practically implemented. The students are also provided with the opportunity to visit the factory to witness manufacturing processes and get to know the application of various technologies. The certifications have helped more than 1,200 engineering students from various institutes in Aurangabad avail a larger pool of job opportunities.
