The eastern coastal state Odisha is one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in India famous for its temples, beaches, wildlife, hills, tribes, handicrafts and handloom. Odisha hit headlines in June 2023 when three trains collided in Balasore district leaving more than 290 people dead and over a 1000 people injured. On 2nd June 2023, the accident involving the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express, Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express and a goods train loaded with iron ore, took place near the Bahanaga Baazar station in Odisha’s Balasore district, which goes down in history as the deadliest train accident in India.
Over 83% of Odisha’s population is rural, while nearly half of it belongs to various socially marginalised communities. The state can be divided into 2 regions – coastal and inland districts. While the former is fertile with a high agricultural yield capacity, the latter are remote, hilly and barren with little forest cover, thus restricting the people’s access to socio-economic development.
In FY 2023-24, Odisha received a total of Rs. 1389.39 Cr. from 557 companies with the district of Jharsuguda enjoying the highest share of CSR funds (Rs 302.97 Cr). Other districts enjoying a fair share of CSR funds include Sundargarh, Khordha, Kendujhar, Angul, Cuttack and Sambalpur.
The top three sectors of focus for CSR initiatives were Education, Health and Heritage, Art & Culture, which received Rs. 601.52 Cr., Rs. 416.27 Cr., and Rs. 124.19 Cr. respectively. The top three spenders in the district were Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (Rs. 266.59 Cr.), Rungta Sons Pvt Ltd (Rs. 177.75 Cr.) and Jindal Steel and Power Limited (Rs 176.39 Cr).

CSR of Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages to manage plastic waste in Puri
Efforts are on to make Puri’s Rath Yatra, one of the oldest and biggest festivals of India, free from used PET bottles. FMCG company Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages (HCCB) in collaboration with Anandana, the Coca-Cola India Foundation, Puri Municipality, District Administration (Puri), Odisha Development Management Programme and Y4D Foundation has inaugurated the ‘Used PET Bottle-Free Puri Rath Yatra 2025’ initiative for the upcoming Puri Rath Yatra. The festival is set to commence on June 27.
The Rath Yatra, a centuries-old chariot procession hosted in Odisha’s Puri, attracts millions of devotees from across the country and beyond. Given the massive footfall, the CSR initiative is particularly relevant, supporting city-wide cleanliness efforts through the collection of used PET bottles from June 27 to July 5, 2025.
Throughout the Rath Yatra, taking place from June 27 to July 5, a workforce of over 180 volunteers will be deployed across various locations, including Pallishree Mela Ground, Bholanath Vidya Pith, Puri Main Bus Stand, Talabania Temporary Bus Stand, Puri Railway Station, Badasankha, Digabareni Square, and beach points like Swargadwar and Hotel Shreehari.
