The CSR Journal Magazine

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday announced its first list of 88 candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, fielding Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma from the Jalukbari constituency.

Key Political Inductions

In a notable political shift, former Congress leader Pradyut Bordoloi has been named as the BJP candidate from Dispur. Bordoloi, currently a Member of Parliament from Nagaon, formally joined the BJP on Wednesday in the presence of Sarma and other senior leaders.

Another recent entrant from the Congress, Bhupen Kumar Borah, has been fielded from Bihpura, reflecting the party’s strategy of inducting and deploying opposition leaders ahead of the polls.

Focus on Women Representation

The list also features several women candidates, including Madhavi Das from Birsing-Jarua, Jyotsana Kalita from Chamaria, and Nilima Devi from Mangaldai.

High-Level Meeting Finalises List

The candidates were finalised during a meeting of the BJP’s Central Election Committee held on Wednesday evening under the chairmanship of party president Nitin Nabin.

The meeting was attended by top party leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia was also present.

Early Campaign Momentum

With the first list covering a significant number of constituencies, the BJP has signalled an early start to its election campaign in Assam, as parties gear up for a high-stakes electoral contest in the state.
