An awareness initiative focused on Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination took place at Sir Sunderlal Hospital, IMS-BHU, on September 22. The event included a health camp, where 11 MBBS students were administered their first dose of the HPV vaccine. This endeavour aims to foster understanding and promote preventive healthcare among young adults.

Importance of HPV Vaccination Emphasised

The programme, organised at the Centre of Excellence for Adolescent Health and Development (Model-AFHC), sought to enlighten students on the critical role of HPV vaccination in preventing diseases associated with the virus, especially cervical cancer. The event aimed to create an informed community regarding the protective measures available against HPV-related health issues.

This initiative was overseen by Prof. (Dr.) Sangeeta Rai, who serves as Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at IMS-BHU and is also the Nodal Officer at the Centre of Excellence for Adolescent Health and Development, SSH-BHU. Her leadership was instrumental in guiding the participants through the significance of the vaccination and associated health benefits.

Prof. (Dr.) DP Yadav from the Department of Gastroenterology further motivated attendees by advocating for widespread awareness of HPV vaccination. He urged the students to relay this crucial information to their family members and communities, emphasising that the vaccine serves as a vital preventive tool against HPV-linked diseases.

Vaccination Schedule and Guidelines Discussed

During the event, the participants were informed about the recommended vaccination schedule. It was explained that individuals aged 9 to 14 years should receive two doses of the vaccine, while those who begin vaccination after 14 typically require a total of three doses. Such a structured approach aims to ensure comprehensive protection against HPV-related health risks.

The camp not only focused on the administration of vaccines but also included informative sessions regarding HPV. Attendees learned how vaccination can significantly reduce the risk of certain cancers and other HPV-associated diseases, contributing to better long-term health outcomes.

The flawless execution of the awareness programme was facilitated by a dedicated team, including Harsh Kumar Singh, Saumya Mishra, and Mazahir Abbas Haidri. Their collaborative efforts were essential in ensuring the success of the health camp, thereby extending the reach of crucial health information to the student body.
