Assam Wrestler Debi Daimari Wins Silver at Khelo India Tribal Games

The CSR Journal Magazine

Debi Daimari, a 28-year-old wrestler from Dineshpur village in Assam’s Golaghat district, has showcased remarkable resilience and determination in her quest for excellence in sports. Orphaned at the age of seven, Daimari faced significant challenges throughout her journey, often working various odd jobs to finance her training. Her relentless efforts culminated in a silver medal victory in the women’s 62kg category at the Khelo India Tribal Games held in Ambikapur, Chhattisgarh.

Hard Work Pays Off

Daimari began her wrestling journey in 2022 at the Khelo India Centre located near Kaziranga. Financial limitations required her to rent accommodation, a task made difficult by the modest income she earned from part-time jobs. “I had to work at an Easy Bazaar store earning Rs 2500 a month to afford my rent,” she explained. Later, she found employment at Bon Villa Resort in Kaziranga, where she earned around Rs 7000 per month while performing duties such as cleaning the swimming pool. Despite her demanding schedule, she managed to dedicate two hours each evening to wrestling practice, leading to her achievement of a silver medal.

Supportive Community

Before focusing solely on wrestling, Daimari participated in powerlifting and arm wrestling. In 2022, she was introduced to Assam’s wrestling coach Anustup Narah during an arm-wrestling competition, who then encouraged her to pursue wrestling more seriously. Narah helped her find a job and provided her with a bicycle to commute for training, significantly aiding her development in the sport.

Continued Success

Shortly after starting her wrestling training, Daimari made her mark by qualifying for the Senior State Championships, which took place in Visakhapatnam. Her commitment and hard work paid off, as she secured a gold medal at the State Championship in 2024. Since then, her achievements have continued to grow, and her personal life has also evolved with her marriage in 2025. The support from her husband, who works in Bengaluru, and her in-laws has been instrumental in her pursuit of sports.

Aspiring for Greater Heights

With the backing of her family and her relentless preparation, Daimari aims to compete at international levels. “My husband consistently supports me by sending money to ensure I can focus on my training,” she said. “I am determined to compete at senior levels and make a mark internationally.” As she looks to future competitions, Daimari is committed to following her coach’s training plans closely, showcasing her dedication toward reaching her goals in the sport.

Khelo India Tribal Games

The Khelo India Tribal Games, which are taking place from March 25 to April 3, 2026, feature a variety of sports, including wrestling, which is part of a broader initiative to promote athletic talent among the tribal populations of India. The ongoing event exemplifies the spirit of competition and community support that athletes like Debi Daimari represent in the country.
