The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched its manifesto for the upcoming 2026 Assam Assembly elections, making several key commitments aimed at empowering women and promoting legal uniformity. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and an increase in direct financial assistance for women under the Orunodoi scheme, raising the amount to Rs 3,000 per month. This announcement was made in Guwahati on March 31, showcasing the party’s vision for making Assam one of the leading states in the country.

Key Promises in the Manifesto

In a detailed presentation, Sarma enumerated 31 promises made by the BJP, asserting the party’s resolve to elevate Assam to new heights. He emphasized the implementation of the UCC while clarifying that areas under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and tribal communities would be exempt from this regulation. The Chief Minister stated, “We do not wish to be a dependent state; our goal is to contribute to national development.” He also announced plans for significant financial investments, including Rs 18,000 crore aimed at flood prevention initiatives within the first two years of a potential new term.

Empowerment Initiatives for Women

As part of the party’s commitment to women’s empowerment, CM Sarma outlined the “Lakhpati Didi” scheme, aiming to provide Rs 25,000 to 40 lakh women throughout the state. He mentioned the importance of job creation, promising 200,000 new positions in the next five years. In addition to the financial assistance increased under the Orunodoi scheme, Sarma reiterated the BJP’s goal of establishing one medical college, one university, and one engineering college in each district to enhance educational access.
