Asia Cup: Sri Lanka Advance, But Spinner Wellalage Returns Home After Father’s Demise

The CSR Journal Magazine

Sri Lankan spinner Dunith Wellalage, 22, was informed about his father’s sudden demise immediately after the Asia Cup Group B match with Afghanistan that happened yesterday in Abu Dhabi. While he was busy in the match, he wasn’t aware that his father Suranga Wellalage passed away earlier in Colombo. This news was conveyed to him by Sri Lanka’s team manager, just after the match. Wellalage immediately left the squad to return home and be with his family.

Sri Lanka entered the Super Four Stage

By winning the match, Sri Lanka entered the Super Four Stage, but the win was overshadowed by the pain of the spinner Dunith Wellalage. The loss of his father has raised questions if he would be able to play in the tournament ahead, the next match is between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh on September 20, with Pakistan on September 23, and with India on September 26.

Promising young player

This was the first Asia Cup for Wellalage and 5th T20 international. Even though he struggled with the ball yesterday, conceding 49 runs in his four overs, he has over a few years built a good rapport as one of the promising young players. He has a record of 5/27 in the last match in Colombo and he has proved himself from time to time.

Though the team won yesterday, this success will always remain bittersweet for the young cricketer. Team players and the cricketing world are extending condolences to Wellalage for his loss.
