Amit Shah Criticizes Rahul Gandhi’s Foreign Visits During Lok Sabha Session

The CSR Journal Magazine

Union Home Minister Amit Shah directed sharp criticism towards Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi during a Lok Sabha session on Wednesday. He questioned Gandhi’s repeated foreign travels, particularly highlighting that while opportunities existed for him to address the House, he has chosen to be “seen in Germany or England.” This remark was made in the context of a heated debate regarding the Opposition’s no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Shah dismissed claims that Gandhi was being denied his chance to speak, arguing that it is ultimately up to individual members to determine when they participate in discussions.

Data Presented to Challenge Allegations

Shah countered the allegations of inhibited speech by stating that data from the 18th Lok Sabha indicates that Congress MPs collectively contributed to discussions for 157 hours and 55 minutes. He emphasized the question of why Gandhi did not take advantage of these speaking opportunities. He stated, “When it is a chance to speak, you are seen in Germany, in England. Then he complains… Congress MPs spoke for 157 hours and 55 minutes in the 18th Lok Sabha. How much did the LoP speak? Why did you not speak? Which Speaker stopped you? Nobody can. Misinformation is spread to defame the Lok Sabha.”

No-Confidence Motion Criticized

Shah also defended the position of the Speaker, objecting to the no-confidence motion initiated by the Opposition against Birla. He asserted that such motions undermine the respect accorded to the parliamentary institution. Recalling historical precedents, he remarked that when the BJP-led alliance held opposition status, it had not pursued a no-confidence motion against the Speaker, instead opting to uphold the dignity of the role. Shah stressed that the Speaker serves as a neutral facilitator in debates, and undermining this impartiality threatens the integrity of India’s democratic process.

Parliamentary Integrity at Stake

In his address, Shah underscored the significance of maintaining respect for parliamentary traditions over the years, warning that questioning the Speaker’s integrity jeopardizes essential tenets of democracy. He described the motion as unprecedented, stating, “This is not ordinary. After nearly four decades, a no-confidence motion against a Lok Sabha Speaker has been brought. It is unfortunate for parliamentary politics and for this House.” Shah’s comments illustrate the seriousness with which he views the current political climate in the Lok Sabha.

Details on the No-Confidence Motion

The no-confidence motion was introduced on Tuesday by Congress MP Mohammad Jawed, receiving support from over 50 MPs, including 118 from Opposition parties who signed the resolution. BJP MP Jagdambika Pal, who presided over the session, granted leave to proceed with the motion and allocated 10 hours for the debate while urging members to adhere to the resolution’s guidelines. He acknowledged the Speaker’s accommodating approach towards the Opposition’s resolution, pointing out the Speaker’s generosity in granting permissions during the proceedings.
