Mizoram’s capital city will soon become the fourth capital city in the northeastern region to be connected to the railway network.
A 51.38 km-long railway line stretching from Bhairabi to Sairang is expected to be inaugurated in June, according to an official statement released on Friday. Other northeastern capital cities already connected by railway include Assam’s main city Guwahati, Tripura’s capital Agartala, and Arunachal Pradesh’s Naharlagun.
Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), told the media that NFR achieved a significant milestone on Thursday with the successful completion of the first-ever trial run to Sairang, near Aizawl in Mizoram. This marks a major achievement in expanding rail connectivity in the northeastern states and makes Mizoram the fourth northeastern state whose capital is connected to the national railway network.
Trail Runs
The trial run was conducted in the presence of NFR General Manager (Construction) Arun Kumar Chaudhary and other senior railway officials. Following the trial, Chaudhary provided a detailed briefing on the scope, progress, and strategic importance of the Bhairabi–Sairang railway project to Mizoram Governor General Vijay Kumar Singh (Retd.) and the state’s Chief Minister, Lalduhoma.
According to Chaudhary, construction is progressing smoothly. The Commissioner of Railway Safety is scheduled to conduct an inspection in early June, with the formal inauguration expected after June 17.
The project is an engineering marvel of Indian Railways. It comprises 48 tunnels, 55 major bridges, and 87 minor bridges. The total length of the tunnels is 12,853 meters, while the height of Bridge Number 196 is approximately 104 meters—making it 42 meters taller than the Qutub Minar. The project also includes five road overbridges and six road underbridges.
This railway line may also be extended to the Mizoram–India–Myanmar border, as announced by Rajya Sabha member K. Vanlalvena.
