AIMIM Endorses AIUDF in Assam After Supporting Humayun Kabir in West Bengal

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a key political maneuver ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, Asaduddin Owaisi, the president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), has declared his party’s support for the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF). This decision came following a direct appeal from Badruddin Ajmal, the chief of AIUDF. Owaisi mentioned that he had a meeting with Ajmal’s son, Abdul Rahman Ajmal, a former MLA, at his residence in Delhi.

Owaisi detailed his upcoming campaign activities, indicating that he plans to visit Guwahati on April 2 and 3. During this visit, he intends to address various public meetings to bolster AIUDF candidates ahead of the elections.

AIMIM’s Recent Activity in West Bengal

This announcement follows AIMIM’s earlier political efforts in West Bengal, where Owaisi expressed support for Humayun Kabir and his Aam Janata Unnayan Party. This move reflects AIMIM’s broader strategy to enhance its political footprint across Eastern India. Owaisi emphasized the importance of establishing a strong leadership from the Muslim minority in the ongoing elections in West Bengal. He noted that the party had already determined the number of seats it would contest in this election.

Owaisi underscored that the alliance is intended not just for the current elections but is part of a larger political objective aimed at strengthening minority representation. “There are only two or three assembly seats remaining for final discussion, which isn’t a major issue. Our primary goal in these elections is to build and strengthen independent political leadership for the Muslim minority in this state,” he stated.

Implications for Upcoming Elections

The growing political alliances forged by AIMIM in both Assam and West Bengal could have significant implications for the electoral landscape, particularly in constituencies that are home to substantial minority populations. Assam is scheduled to hold its elections for the 126-member Assembly on April 9, while West Bengal will conduct its elections in two phases, on April 23 and April 29. Votes will be counted on May 4.
