Vedanta Expands Gamsberg Zinc Plant With Rs 5,757 Crore Investment

The CSR Journal Magazine

Vedanta has significantly expanded its Gamsberg zinc mine in South Africa with an investment of approximately ZAR 10 billion, equivalent to around Rs 5,757 crore. This investment marks one of the largest mining initiatives in the country over the past decade. The Gamsberg Phase II concentrator plant was inaugurated by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Friday in Aggeneys.

The event was attended by Indian High Commissioner Prabhat Kumar, Consul General Ruby Jaspreet, and other notable figures. During the inauguration, President Ramaphosa emphasised the strong historical ties and shared democratic values between India and South Africa. He described the occasion as a reaffirmation of the enduring relationship between the two nations.

Ramaphosa noted that the partnership has evolved to encompass various sectors, including trade, investment, technology, education, and international cooperation, stemming from a mutual struggle against colonialism and oppression. Ramaphosa highlighted the presence of over 150 Indian companies in South Africa, which contribute to investment, employment, and industrial expertise. He cited Vedanta as a key example of this bilateral partnership, demonstrating the positive impact of Indian investments in the region.

Focus on Sustainable Development

In his address, Ramaphosa urged investors to create local employment opportunities, develop industries, transfer skills, and support surrounding communities. He stressed the importance of sustainable investments that yield benefits beyond mere returns for shareholders. The president also welcomed Vedanta’s plans to establish zinc-smelting capacity in Northern Cape, which is South Africa’s largest province.

According to Ramaphosa, this initiative will facilitate the country’s transition from producing zinc concentrate to refined metal. The Gamsberg concentrator plant plays a crucial role in this process by separating valuable minerals from mined ore, producing concentrated material for further processing. The zinc concentrate generated at Gamsberg can subsequently be refined into zinc metal.

The Consulate General of India in Cape Town confirmed via a post on X that the Phase II expansion represents an investment of about ZAR 10 billion. This expansion is expected to double Gamsberg’s annual ore-processing capacity from four million tonnes to eight million tonnes, while also increasing its annual zinc-in-concentrate production capacity to approximately 500,000 tonnes, as stated on the company’s website.

Historical Context and Future Prospects

Vedanta acquired the Gamsberg asset from Anglo American in 2011, and the first phase of the mine was inaugurated by Ramaphosa in February 2019. The management of Vedanta Zinc International oversees the group’s zinc assets in both South Africa and Namibia. The recent expansion of the Gamsberg plant signifies a major Indian investment in South Africa’s mining sector, which is expected to strengthen economic ties between the two nations.

Ramaphosa’s remarks during the inauguration underscored the significance of this investment in creating local benefits and enhancing South Africa’s capacity to process zinc. The expansion aligns with the broader objectives of fostering economic growth and development through international partnerships.

As the Gamsberg project progresses, it is anticipated to have a lasting impact on both the local economy and the mining industry in South Africa. The collaboration between India and South Africa in this venture exemplifies the potential for further growth and mutual benefit in the future.
