Actor Naveen Kaushik Responds to Dhruv Rathee’s Criticism of Dhurandhar 2

The CSR Journal Magazine

The discussion surrounding the film Dhurandhar: The Revenge has gained momentum following comments from political commentator Dhruv Rathee, who labeled the movie as “brain rot” and accused it of promoting propaganda. In light of the ensuing backlash and mixed reviews, actor Naveen Kaushik has stepped forward to advocate for a more balanced discourse, urging viewers to refrain from allowing films to become a catalyst for hostility.

In a podcast interview with Hindi Rush, Kaushik discussed the escalating scrutiny surrounding the Aditya Dhar directorial. Portraying Donga in the franchise featuring Ranveer Singh, he shared insights on the interconnected nature of films and politics, asserting that they are nearly inseparable.

Actor’s Perspective on Politics in Films

Kaushik remarked that various dimensions of existence are intertwined with political themes, whether on a national scale or in personal interactions, emphasizing that relationships themselves often harbor political undertones. He acknowledged the presence of subtle political elements in storytelling, asserting that quality cinema invariably reflects some ideology or political stance. He expressed his reservations about the notion that films can be entirely neutral, positing that every narrative inherently carries a viewpoint. In Kaushik’s opinion, labeling a film as propaganda is frequently contingent upon the viewer’s perspective, rather than an objective reality.

Call for Responsible Engagement with Cinema

In his discourse, Kaushik underscored the importance of responsible engagement with film as a medium. He stated, “Everyone has the right to express their opinion, but a film should not become a source of hate or violence. It’s a film – experience it as one. Take what you learn from it, and simply enjoy it.” His comments reflect an appeal for audiences to appreciate films within the intended context, rather than allowing them to provoke animosity or aggression.

Dhruv Rathee’s Initial Criticism

The controversy gained traction shortly after the film’s theatrical release when Rathee took to social media to criticize Dhurandhar 2. He commented, “I called Aditya Dhar a BJP propagandist 3 months ago. Now everyone will see it. It was subtle in the previous film, but he went so blatant this time in overconfidence. Remember how I said, well-made propaganda is more dangerous? It’s not even well-made anymore.” His remarks have contributed to the ongoing debate surrounding the film’s political implications and artistic integrity.

Overview of Dhurandhar 2

Dhurandhar 2, which premiered on March 19 and is available in multiple languages, continues the narrative of an undercover Indian agent maneuvering through the perilous underworld of Lyari while mitigating threats to India. The sequel explores the protagonist’s evolution into Hamza Ali Mazari and his ascent within a complex power dynamic across borders. Featuring a prominent ensemble cast that includes Ranveer Singh, Arjun Rampal, R Madhavan, Rakesh Bedi, Sara Arjun, Danish Pandor, and Sanjay Dutt, the film aims to deliver both suspense and action.
