Zomato Explores Drone Delivery Options Amid Partner Shortage Concerns

The CSR Journal Magazine

Zomato and its associated platform Blinkit rank among the leading delivery services in India, relying heavily on a vast workforce to fulfil customer needs for food, groceries, and other essential items. As per the latest company statistics, approximately 31 lakh individuals were engaged as delivery partners for Zomato and Blinkit during the financial year 2025-26. This workforce is projected to expand in the years ahead, necessitating effective strategies for maintaining delivery efficiency.

The founder of Zomato, Deepinder Goyal, recently addressed concerns about the possibility of a workforce shortage impacting delivery capabilities. In a response on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), he expressed the hope that the trend of universal delivery employment may not become a reality. Goyal stated, “I hope not. We need better jobs.” He acknowledged that the company may look into drone technology as a potential solution if finding sufficient delivery partners becomes challenging.

These comments come at a time when there is increasing dialogue surrounding gig employment in India and the evolving role of technology in the delivery sector. While Goyal’s mention of drones suggests a forward-thinking approach, no definitive plans have been made regarding the implementation of such a system within Zomato at this time.

Impact on Employment Statistics

Goyal also indicated that Zomato’s parent company, Eternal, supports the livelihoods of more than 1 per cent of India’s total population when taking into account employees, warehouse staff, and their families. He expressed aspirations to grow this figure to 5 per cent by 2030. This ambitious goal emphasizes the company’s commitment to not only enhancing service capabilities but also contributing positively to the broader economy by expanding job opportunities.

Employment in delivery services has raised several discussions in recent years. As companies explore innovative ways to fulfil customer demands, the potential for technology to reshape the workforce dynamics is becoming more pronounced. The consideration of drones reflects an awareness of the challenges that may arise in sustaining a robust delivery network.

Despite the speculative nature of Goyal’s remarks regarding the future use of drones, it is evident that advancements in drone technology have piqued the interest of various stakeholders within the food delivery industry. The need for effective delivery solutions may lead to increased experimentation with such technologies as companies strive to remain competitive.

Current Developments in Drone Delivery

While drone deliveries are not yet a commonplace aspect of the Indian market, several initiatives are taking shape worldwide. Companies outside of India have been actively exploring drone technology for delivery purposes. For instance, in the United States, DoorDash has established partnerships with various drone delivery firms such as Wing, Flytrex, and Manna. These collaborations enable the company to provide delivery services from selected restaurants to customers in designated regions.

Drone delivery services have begun operating in specific locations such as parts of the Dallas–Fort Worth area and Charlotte, demonstrating the potential of this technology in urban settings. Alphabet’s Wing, which operates under the Google parent company, has also engaged in drone delivery partnerships with retailers like Walmart across several markets in the US. Customers can place orders and receive deliveries at specified points, although this service is still limited by various regulatory factors.

Challenges facing drone deliveries include restrictions on the size and weight of packages, unpredictable weather conditions, and safety protocols concerning where drones may operate. The path toward widespread adoption of drone technology in delivery services remains complex and requires addressing these limitations.
