Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was born on September 26, 1820, in West Bengal and emerged as a pivotal figure in 19th-century social reform. Having studied at Sanskrit College in Calcutta, he was bestowed with the title “Vidyasagar.” His career included serving as the principal of Sanskrit College, where he was instrumental in promoting English education and opening opportunities for students from lower castes.

Vidyasagar’s advocacy extended beyond education; he was a passionate campaigner for widow remarriage and was dedicated to advancing girls’ education. His opposition to child marriage and polygamy further exemplified his commitment to creating a just society.
