India’s Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand delivered a remarkable performance at the Asian Games, triumphing over the world No. 3 pairing of Mayu Matsumoto and Yuki Fukushima from Japan. The match took place on September 26, with the Indian duo securing their spot in the women’s doubles quarterfinals following a scoreline of 24-22, 21-18. This victory marks a significant achievement, adding to their earlier success against the same opponents in the team event.

The contest unfolded with the Indians displaying commendable resilience. After clinching a tight opening game, they found themselves trailing 8-11 in the second. However, they mounted a strong comeback, managing to equalise at 15-15. As the match reached a critical juncture, both teams fought hard, with the score tied at 18-18 before Treesa and Gayatri took a decisive lead and ultimately sealed the match.

Now, the young Indian pair looks ahead to the quarterfinals, where they will face Malaysia’s world No. 5 duo, Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan. A victory in this match will bring them a step closer to claiming an Asian Games medal.

Teenager Unnati Hooda Advances in Women’s Singles

In a notable achievement in women’s singles, 19-year-old Unnati Hooda defeated Indonesia’s world No. 6, Putri Kusuma Wardani, in straight games with scores of 21-19 and 21-13. This win propelled Hooda into the quarterfinals of the event. Her remarkable performance highlights her growing confidence and skill on the international stage.

Hooda’s next challenge will be a formidable encounter against Akane Yamaguchi of Japan, who is ranked world No. 3 and is considered a strong contender for the title. This match promises to be a crucial test for the young athlete as she aims to progress further in the tournament.

Squash Players Abhay and Anahat Reach Finals

In squash, Abhay Singh secured his position in the men’s singles final by defeating Muhammad Irfan from Pakistan with a scoreline of 11-3, 12-10, 11-6. Abhay demonstrated his dominance throughout the match, especially in the final game, which he won comfortably. He is set to compete for the gold medal against either Noor Zaman from Pakistan or Eain Yow Ng from Malaysia.

Also making headlines, Anahat Singh advanced to the women’s singles final, narrowly defeating Japan’s Satomi Watanabe in a closely contested match that went to five games, ending with a score of 3-2. Both players have shown tremendous skill, representing India on a grand platform.

In mixed doubles, India’s pair of Joshna Chinappa and Velavan Senthilkumar secured a bronze medal after their semifinal loss to Hong Kong’s Tang Ming Hong and Lee Ka Yi. Their performance throughout the tournament has contributed to India’s growing medal tally.

India’s Overall Performance at the Asian Games

On the same day, India celebrated another victory as the women’s kabaddi team claimed gold, defeating Iran in the final with a score of 37-34. This success marks a successful title defence for the team, showcasing India’s strength in this sport.

Additionally, Sawan Barwal secured a silver medal in the men’s marathon with a national record time of 2:11:37. Meanwhile, the women’s team consisting of Ashi Chouksey, Tilottama Sen, and Vidarsa Vinod also earned silver in the women’s 50m rifle three positions event. As of now, India’s total medal count stands at 27, comprising three gold, eleven silver, and thirteen bronze medals, positioning the nation 12th in the overall standings during the ongoing Games.
