Raghubir Yadav has embraced a challenging new role in the series Hunkkaar: The Roar, stepping away from the welcoming characters he usually portrays. In this project, he plays Sunil Chakosi, widely known as Baapji, a revered godman facing serious allegations of sexual assault against a 17-year-old girl. To fully embrace this character, Yadav undertook a significant physical transformation that was both striking and disorienting for him.

In an exclusive interview, Yadav highlighted that shaving his head was one of the most daunting aspects of preparing for the role. Opting for authenticity, he rejected the use of wigs or prosthetics. He described his first encounter with his new appearance on screen as a deeply unsettling experience, stating, “When I saw myself for the first time without hair, I almost started hating myself.”

This transformation ultimately aided Yadav in immersing himself in the character of Baapji. As he recounted, relinquishing his familiar look facilitated a deeper exploration of his character’s psyche. The actor noted that this experience contributed to his personal understanding of the filmmaking process.

Character’s Impact on Performance

Yadav elaborated on how the process of cutting his hair significantly influenced his connection to the character. He explained that after shedding his previous appearance, he found himself more aligned with Baapji’s persona. This alignment enabled him to internalise the character’s pain and enriched his overall understanding of acting. “Seeing it on the big screen at the trailer launch was such a different experience,” he remarked.

The actor further discussed the absence of shortcuts in embodying his bald look, insisting that genuine transformations are crucial for authenticity in acting. He cited that using a wig would have interfered with his immersion in the role, as it might always feel artificial. Yadav stated, “There is something fundamentally different about actually undergoing the transformation rather than simply putting on a prosthetic.”

Additionally, Yadav mentioned how the atmosphere on set shifted his perception and performance. He compared it to other projects where actors casually engage with one another between takes. He described the environment during filming as isolating, which helped him focus more intensely on the character of Baapji and its accompanying emotions.

Insights on Regrowing Hair and Series Overview

Yadav’s physical change also unexpectedly became a light-hearted point during the conversation when he was inquired about regrowing his hair. He humorously noted that he had no sponsors to endorse hair products and reminisced about his childhood, recalling the use of mustard oil during his upbringing.

Hunkkaar: The Roar debuted on JioHotstar on Friday, fashioned as a six-episode courtroom crime drama. The narrative centres on Meenu Rawat, portrayed by Aneet Padda, who accuses Baapji of sexual assault, triggering a complex legal battle involving law enforcement, attorneys, the media, and Baapji’s extensive network of followers.

The cast also features notable actors such as Fatima Sana Shaikh as ACP Jasleen Singh Soin, who is investigating the case, along with Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Arjun Mathur, Ram Kapoor, Rajesh Sharma, and Zoya Hussain. The series, created by Karan D Kapadia and Nitya Mehra, aims to explore themes of justice and power within the context of contemporary society.
