The CSR Journal Magazine

On April 6, the India-registered vessel Green Asha made a successful passage through the Strait of Hormuz, as confirmed by official sources. This vessel represents the eighth India-flagged LPG carrier to navigate the Strait since hostilities began on February 28. The transit highlights India’s ongoing maritime operations amidst the complex situation in the Middle East.

In a related development, the large gas carrier Green Sanvi also crossed the Strait of Hormuz on the evening of April 3, transporting approximately 46,650 metric tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Prior to this, another vessel, MT Jag Vasant, successfully delivered a cargo of 47,000 metric tonnes to the Vadinar Terminal in DPA Kandla, Gujarat, on March 28. The transfer of this cargo is expected to occur via a Ship-to-Ship (STS) operation.

Indian Navy Support and Safety Measures

The Indian Navy has been placed on alert, with warships ready to assist merchant vessels in the region during this tense period. The Indian government is in discussions with Iranian authorities to facilitate the passage of Indian vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, amidst ongoing challenges related to maritime security due to the regional conflict. The Shipping Ministry has indicated that 18 vessels, carrying a total of around 485 Indian seafarers, are currently operational in the Persian Gulf.

According to Mukesh Mangal, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, all Indian ships and their crews in the Persian Gulf are under continuous observation to ensure their safety. He affirmed that all seafarers present in the Gulf region remain secure. A total of 964 Indian seafarers have already been repatriated as part of ongoing efforts to address the developing security situation.

Passenger Return and Port Operations

Amid the shifting circumstances in West Asia and the Gulf region, over 598,000 passengers have returned to India. Mangal further elaborated on port operations, stating that they are maintaining ongoing coordination with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the Ministry of External Affairs, Indian missions abroad, and other partners within the maritime sector to ensure continued operational effectiveness for Indian ports.
